DURHAM – Duke softball volunteer assistant coach
Nicole Schaffer has been recognized for her playing career accomplishments as she was recently named to the Northeast Conference (NEC) Mount Rushmore team.
In celebration of its 40th season as an NCAA Division I conference, the NEC is paying tribute to its heritage with seasonal announcements of its Mount Rushmore award winners. Each announcement declares four student-athletes from a specific sport on a hypothetical mountain. Student-athletes were selected by a conference panel based on their individual accomplishments both on the conference and national levels while they competed in the NEC.
Schaffer spent her four-year career (2012-15) as a pitcher for the Colonials before joining the Blue Devils staff in 2020. Schaffer was a three-time NEC Pitcher of the Year, three-time All-NEC First Team honoree and was the 2012 NEC Rookie of the Year. In addition, she is one of just four players in program history to earn All-NEC First Team honors on three occasions.
Since joining the Blue Devils staff, Schaffer has been a seamless addition to the coaching staff that was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Southeast Region Staff of the Year. Schaffer works primarily with the pitchers, who are coming off an enormous season in which rising senior and rising graduate student
Shelby Walters and
Peyton St. George earned NFCA Second and Third Team All-Region honors, respectively as well as All-ACC First Team accolades.
