DURHAM, N.C. – As the 2021-22 cross country and track & field season approaches, several new faces have joined the Duke coaching staff. With the final new addition, join us as we complete our introduction of the people behind the title.
Joining the Blue Devils as an assistant coach (throws) is
Angelo Posillico. Posillico comes to Durham after a successful tenure at Army West Point, where he was the 2021 USTFCCCA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year and coached some of the program's best throwers including August Cook, who qualified for three NCAA Outdoor Championships in the javelin.

When did you first get involved in track & field?
Posillico: "I went out for track & field in ninth grade to stay in shape for wrestling. Initially, I was a distance runner, and it wasn't until I went to college and my freshman year I had some injuries, so my coaches converted me to a hammer thrower. That was kind of my path that kind of went through college and got me into the events that I now coach working with the throwers and I've been around the sport ever since ninth grade."
When did you know you wanted to be a coach?
Posillico: "My senior year of college, I had the opportunity to go to a couple of coaching clinics. One of them was in Las Vegas and it was this collection of really the best of the best coaches in our sport. So, I was really impressed listening to those coaches, how passionate they were about the sport and it really just solidified for me that it was a profession that I thought I wanted to get into. I'm very competitive and I love to teach, so it's a job that lets me do both of those things."
What is your most proud or lasting moment as an athlete or coach?
Posillico: "When I coached at my alma mater, at SUNY Oneonta, we at one point won the school's first SUNYAC championship as a team with the men's indoor track & field program and that was really special. Having been a member of that team as a student-athlete, then being able to come back as a coach and bring the first of what went on to be a few team titles in the sport, just made me feel like I was giving back to the program that really did a lot for me as a student-athlete. So, it was really special for me to be there for that first one as a member of the coaching staff, and I think just what it meant to those student-athletes and for your alma mater."
What initially attracted you to Duke?
Posillico: "The balance of high academics and top athletics. I don't think there are very many schools in the country that really do that. A lot say they do, but I don't think there are many that do it like this school does. That's the environment I want to be a part of. I want to work with not just the best athletes, but the brightest students in this sport as well."
What is the first Duke experience you'd like to have?
Posillico: "I want to have a good first day of practice [laughter]. I just want to get rolling and have a great first day and then a great second day."
What is something people may not know about you?
Posillico: "I am a very active investor and trader. I love trading stocks. It's a hobby I picked up during the pandemic with the extra time on my hands and trade options, equities, cryptocurrencies, and all kinds of stuff. I think it's fascinating. I check the Yahoo Finance app probably a hundred times a day [laughter]. It's just something I've really gotten into over the last year and a half."
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
Posillico: "I want to start building a culture within the throws group. I want that group to be a big part of the program. We want to win more conference championships and I want the throws program to really be an integral part of that. For those athletes and the alumni that went through the throws program to be really excited for where its going and proud of what they are accomplishing. That's really the first thing I want to start doing."
