DURHAM, N.C. – For the fifth straight Olympic Games, Duke women's track & field will be represented on the world stage, as Duke alumna and volunteer assistant coach
Maddy Price and Duke alumna
Kate Van Buskirk have been selected to represent Canada at the upcoming Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Â
It marks the first Olympic Games nod for Price, who has been selected to compete as part of the 4x400m relay team. Price's nomination by Canada makes it the third country that a Blue Devil woman has competed for, joining the United States and Israel.
Â
A gifted sprinter, Price left Duke as one of the program's top performers of all-time, with three outdoor All-America honors in the 4x400m relay and one in the indoor distance medley relay in 2016. To date, Price remains the program record holder in the indoor 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay and the outdoor 4x200m relay, with several top five marks across many more sprinting events.
Â
Price has played a key role in the Canadian 4x400m relay for some time, as she helped the team set a season best of 3:25.86 in the 2019 IAAF World Championships en route to qualification to the event final. She was also part of the Canadian national record-setting 4x400m mixed relay team, which took 10th with a time of 3:16.76 at the same event.
Â
Van Buskirk will also make her first appearance in the Olympic Games and will compete in the 5000m. With both Price and Van Buskirk set to run, it will be the first time that the Blue Devils have had two Olympians in the same year since
Shannon Rowbury and
Jillian Schwartz participated in the 2012 Olympic Games.
Â
A decorated distancer runner, Van Buskirk remains the Blue Devils record holder in the indoor 1000m and the mile with times of 2:41.00 and 4:33.71, respectively. Both times have stood for the last 10 years.
Â
The Brampton, Ontario native was a two-time USTFCCCA First Team All-America honoree and two-time ACC Champion in her track & field tenure at Duke, while winning the 2006 ACC Freshman of the Year award and three All-Southeast Region honors in cross country.
Â
Women's 5000m heats will start on July 30, followed by the final on August 2. Women's 4x400m relay heats are scheduled to begin on August 5, with the final to follow on August 7. All events will be broadcasted in the United States via NBCUniversal.
