DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving head coach
Dan Colella announced the incoming freshman class for the 2021-22 season. With the announcement, GoDuke.com will be highlighting all 13 signees in the coming weeks.
Blake Johnson joins the Duke swimming & diving team after enjoying a successful career at both Maury High School and Old Dominion Aquatic Club. A native of Norfolk, Va., Johnson primarily swims distance freestyle events.
"I grew up in a Duke household, which afforded me the opportunity to visit the campus and interact with alumni on various occasions, vaulting the University to the forefront of my college search," Johnson said. "The coaching staff and athletes were transparent and immensely involved during my recruiting process which generated an immediate connection. I am extremely excited and honored to be a part of Duke's world class education and top tier athletics."
Johnson excelled in the pool as he was the 14th-ranked prospect in the state of Virginia via SwimCloud.com. He qualified for the Toyota US Open and the Summer Junior Nationals in the 500 freestyle. In addition, he was a five-time Virginia Class 5 State Championships finalist. Johnson earned Scholastic All-American honors as both a sophomore and a senior, spanning across five events.
In addition to his accolades in the pool, Johnson was an Eagle Scout and a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
Johnson was born on August 23, 2002 and is the son of Bonnie and Kurt Johnson. He has two older sisters, Kara and Kristen. His father, Kurt, and his uncle, Erik Johnson, graduated from Duke in 1987. His mother, Bonnie, swam at Miami University from 1986-90 and his sister, Kristen, is currently a member of the Rhode Island swimming team.
