DURHAM – After 16 seasons of coaching, Duke swimming and diving Associate Head Coach
Dawn Kane announced she will be stepping away from the pool deck and transitioning into a new role within Duke Athletics.
"I cannot thank Dawn enough for all she has done these last sixteen years for the Duke swimming and diving program," head coach
Dan Colella said. "She has touched, mentored and helped so many individuals during a very formative time of their lives. I don't think there has been anyone who has encountered her within the team, the athletic department or community who would not tell you she is absolutely terrific. We are going to miss her, but luckily for Duke Athletics, in her new position she will be able to spread that joy amongst everyone and not just our team."
In early July, Kane will shift into her new role as Duke's Director of Student-Athlete Development. In this position, she will oversee career development and community service for student-athletes while assisting with leadership and personal development programing.
Kane arrived at Duke with Colella prior to the 2005-06 season and was an assistant coach before being elevated to the position of associate head coach in August 2014.
She has been instrumental in building the Duke swimming and diving program to its current level of success, guiding student-athletes to numerous achievements at the conference, national and international levels. Under Kane's guidance, the Duke men and women have made appearances at the last nine NCAA Championship meets and continue to make strides within the ACC. In her 16 seasons, she has coached student-athletes that have compiled 54 CSCAA All-America honors and 53 All-ACC awards while also excelling in the classroom, seeing 100 named to the All-ACC academic team.
Kane has directed the Duke men and women to numerous program firsts, including five NCAA individual titles, a conference crown in a relay event (200 freestyle relay - 2011), three ACC records (Peter Kropp, 100 breaststroke - 2014, 2017; 200 medley relay - 2012) and the highest rankings in program history (9th in women's and 15th in men's in 2019-20). The school records book and all-time top-10 lists have been completely re-written under her watch, and both the men's and women's teams have broken into the top-20 nationally at the NCAA Championships. In addition, Kane was selected an honorable mention for
CollegeSwimming.com's Assistant Coach of the Year Award at the conclusion of the 2011-12 campaign.
Prior to Duke, Kane was an eight-year member of the Jamaican national swimming squad and a two-time Olympian (2000 in Sydney, Australia and 2004 in Athens, Greece).
Kane graduated from Brown in 2002 with a degree in psychology and was an Ivy League champion in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Following graduation, Kane went on to earn a master's degree in human performance from Florida in 2005.
