EUGENE, Ore. – Two of Duke track & field's most decorated student-athletes completed day two of the U.S. Olympic Trials, as graduate students
Brittany Aveni and
Cha'Mia Rothwell finished their respective 400m and 100m hurdles races at Hayward Field on Saturday.
In the first event of the day, Rothwell competed in the 100m hurdles. The Durham, N.C., native faced a competitive field, made up with several Olympians and turned in a time of 13.10 seconds. The mark put in her fifth place in her heat and 20th overall but left her 0.14 seconds short of advancement to the semifinals. Nevertheless, it shaved off 0.04 seconds from her time of 13.14 seconds that made a USTFCCCA First Team All-America several days ago.
The night cap came from Aveni, who competed in the semifinals of the 400m, after qualifying for the event on Friday. The Geneva, Ohio native improved on her qualifying time of 52.54 seconds yesterday with a run of 52.31 seconds in today's semifinal. However, Aveni finished 15th overall, missing out on the final eight.
It was a remarkable season for both runners, who combined for five separate USTFCCCA All-America honors this outdoor season, including one first team distinction for each. Aveni will have one more chance to compete in the 200m later in the trials.
The Blue Devils will be back in action at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Thursday, June 24 as former Blue Devil
Megan Clark and signee and future Blue Devil
Paige Sommers will compete in the pole vault at 8 p.m. ET., with Aveni to follow at 9:31 p.m. Senior
Lauren Hoffman will be the next current Blue Devil to make their U.S. Olympic Trials debut, beginning on Friday, June 25 at 6:35 p.m. ET in the 400m hurdles.
