DURHAM – Duke landed nine on the 2021 All-ACC Academic Men's Lacrosse Team as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. The nine selections are the second most of the five teams in the league, trailing Virginia's 10.
Earning recognition for their excellence on the field as well as in the classroom are
Mike Adler, Braden Burke, Owen Caputo, Tyler Carpenter, JT Giles-Harris, Jake Naso, Brennan O'Neill, Joe Robertson and
Michael Sowers.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
It is the first honor for graduate student transfers Adler and Sowers as well as Burke, Caputo, Carpenter, Naso and O'Neill. Robertson and Giles-Harris garner their third and second awards, respectively. Duke is the lone program to have two true freshmen on the squad as Naso and O'Neill were two of the four rookies selected.
O'Neill, Robertson and Sowers led the Blue Devil offense, combing to score 118 goals and 72 assists for 190 points. They had a hand in 50 percent of Duke's points on the year.
Caputo started eight games on Duke's first midfield line and finished with 20 goals and five assists to rank tied for fifth on the team in scoring.
Adler and Giles-Harris were the anchors to the Duke defense that finished with a 10.12 goals against average. In goal, Adler averaged 9.53 saves per game to earn USILA All-America third team recognition. Giles-Harris was a top cover guy on close defense and departed Duke as the record holder for career caused turnovers with 89.
At longstick midfield, Burke and Carpenter both were crucial pieces to the defense as well as the faceoff unit. Burke finished his junior season with 22 ground balls and seven caused turnovers, while Carpenter had 72 and 23, respectively. Carpenter garnered All-America third team recognition.
Naso shined as Duke's faceoff specialist in his rookie season, winning 63 percent of his faceoffs and picking up 133 ground balls. His 227 wins at the faceoff dot were the most by a Duke freshman in school history.
Duke finished the season with a 14-3 overall record, won a share of the ACC title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.
