DURHAM – The All-ACC Academic Rowing Team was announced Monday, with a program-record 13 Blue Devils included on this year's squad.
Duke's 13 honorees surpass the program's previous record of 10 selections in 2008 and 2019. Among the selections were graduate student
Tara Fagan, seniors
Savannah Herbek and
Ema Kuczura, juniors
Grace Butero,
Sydney Johnson,
Gabriella Salvati and
Amelia Shunk, sophomores
Rivca Chaver,
Megan Lee and
Emilie Lijesen, and freshmen
Erin Heyeck,
Brenna Morley and
Ithika Senthilnathan.
It marks the first All-ACC Academic nod for 11 team members, while Kuczura and Shunk each earned their second career recognition (2019). With a majority of last year's campaign shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ACC did not release an All-Academic Team in 2020.
The award also comes as the second academic achievement in the last week for eight Blue Devils, as Butero, Chaver, Herbek, Johnson, Kuczura, Lee, Salvati and Shunk were each named Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) on Wednesday, June 9.
Fagan caps off a stellar career in Durham with her first career All-ACC Academic honor. In five seasons with the Blue Devils, the coxswain from Annapolis, Md., was twice tapped to an All-ACC team while also twice earning a spot on the ACC Academic Honor Roll. This spring, she guided the Varsity Eight boat to a pair of ACC Crew of the Week nods and a silver medal at the ACC Championship, where she was named second-team all-conference. Fagan received her master's degree in Management Studies in May.
Johnson and Salvati also follow up All-ACC status with academic recognition. The pair who sat three seat (Salvati) and four seat (Johnson) in the V8 boat were both named to the All-ACC First Team after a silver medal-winning effort at the conference regatta.
The Blue Devils have had at least four selections to the All-ACC Academic Team each year since 2008. Duke's 13 honorees were the second-most in the conference behind Virginia's 14.
