SARASOTA, Fla. – The Duke Varsity Four boat finished second in its repechage to advance to the A/B semifinals, highlighting day one of the NCAA Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
After clocking a third-place time of 7:21.076 in its opening heat, the V4 crew came in at 7:26.348 in its afternoon repechage (second-chance heat) – less than three seconds behind Syracuse – to earn a spot in Saturday's top semifinal race. The Blue Devils and Orange battled down the entire course, and were within a tenth of a second of one another at the 1,000-meter mark, but Syracuse managed to pull away in the final sprint.
In the A/B semifinals, Duke – which entered the weekend as the No. 8 seed in the V4 division – joins the top two crews from each opening V4 heat, as well as the top two finishers in the V4 repechages. The remaining crews are slotted in the C/D semifinals. Duke's V4 will race against Washington State, Virginia, Texas, Ohio State and Rutgers at 10:24 a.m. Saturday.
The Blue Devils' Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight squads will both compete in the C/D semifinals on Saturday, beginning with the V8 at 8:24 a.m. Duke's V8 got Friday started with a fourth-place showing in its opening heat. The Blue Devils held a narrow lead over Washington State at the 1,000-meter mark, but the Cougars pulled ahead late and took third by less than 1.5 seconds. The V8 clocked another strong time in its repechage, finishing at 6:37.175, which was good for a fifth-place result.
The 2V8 also finished in the top four of its heat, registering a third-place time of 6:39.368, which trailed fourth-seeded Stanford and fifth-seeded Michigan. The crew, coxed by freshman
Ithika Senthilnathan, finished third again in its repechage at 6:44.671. Duke's 2V8 will race at 9:12 a.m. Saturday, taking on Gonzaga, Northeastern, Tennessee and Navy.
