SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – For the fifth time out of six years since match play was instituted at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, Duke has advanced to the match play portion as the Blue Devils placed second in stroke play with a 3-over-par 1,155 at the 6,399-yard, par 72 Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Duke carded the tied for third-best round Monday with a 1-over, 289, and finished behind Stanford (1,142). Rounding out the top eight teams to advance to match play was Oklahoma State (1,157), Ole Miss (1,159), Texas (1,161), Auburn (1,170), Arizona State (1,173) and Arizona (1,173). Â

Â
If Duke advances, the Blue Devils will face the winner of the No. 3 seed Oklahoma State versus No. 6 seed Auburn on Tuesday afternoon. The Golf Channel will cover that match from 5-9 p.m. (ET). Â
Duke's five appearances in match play is tied for the second most in NCAA action along with Southern California, while Stanford leads with six. Â
Over the 72 holes, freshman
Phoebe Brinker and junior
Gina Kim paced the Blue Devils as the duo finished in a tie for fifth with a 2-under, 286. Â
Kim, a product of Chapel Hill, N.C., turned in her second straight top-10 finish at the NCAA Championship as she was tied for 10th as a freshman in 2019. She joins only Duke standouts Celine Boutier, Amanda Blumenherst and Jennie Lee to notch back-to-back top-10 placements in the championship in their first two appearances. Â
On Monday, Kim was up-and-down over the first nine holes as she carded two birdies, but made the turn at 2-over, 38. She caught fire on the back nine as she hit her 54-degree wedge to 33 feet and rolled in her third birdie of the day on the par-5. Kim added a 7-foot birdie on No. 14 and then rolled in a 4-footer on No. 17 to get to 1-under-par for the day. On No. 18, she tried to go for the green in two and knocked it in the water, before finishing with a double-bogey to close with a 73. Â
Over the four days, Kim played holes 10-18 at 4-under-par with nine birdies. Â
Brinker became just the sixth Blue Devil rookie to finish in the top-5 of the NCAA Championship as she posted rounds of 73, 70, 72 and 71. A native of Wilmington, Del., Brinker bogeyed the first hole, but came back to birdie the 500-yard, par-5 No. 4, which played as the second-hardest hole on the course Monday. She added a 30-footer for birdie on No. 8 to get to red digits. After back-to-back bogeys on No. 10 and No. 11, Brinker closed the final seven holes at 2-under-par with birdies on No. 13 and No. 18. Her round of 1-under, 71, was a team best to close stroke play.
Blue Devil senior
Jaravee Boonchant posted a 73 on Monday, on her way to finishing the stroke play portion tied for 20th with a 3-over, 291. It marked her second consecutive top-20 finish in the NCAA Championship as she placed tied for seventh in 2019. Over the first seven holes, Boonchant had six pars, but got in a little trouble off the tee on No. 4 as she finished with a double-bogey. She turned it around on No. 8 and No. 9 as she sank 12-foot and 27-foot birdies, respectively, to make the turn at even par. After an unlucky break on No. 10, which led to a bogey, she knocked her 54-degree wedge from 70 yards to six feet and rolled in the birdie. Boonchant suffered bogeys on No. 13 and No. 16, before rolling in an 8-foot birdie on No. 17. She hit 13 greens on the day. Â
In her first appearance in the NCAA Championship, sophomore
Erica Shepherd tied for 36th with rounds of 73, 73, 74 and 74 for a 294. She parred the first nine holes on Monday, but got unlucky on her drive on No. 10 as it was close to the hazard and she was standing on the down slope to hit the ball. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., nearly lost her footing as she swung and went in the desert area, where she had to take an unplayable. She made double-bogey, but closed the back nine at even-par as she rolled in a 6-foot birdie on No. 18 to conclude her round. Â
After turning in rounds of 76, 77 and 75 the first three days, freshman
Anne Chen was solid on the final day as she posted three birdies and finished with an even-par, 72. Chen, a product of Sugar Land, Texas, opened her day with a birdie on No. 1 as she hit her pitching wedge from 115 yards to six feet. She added five pars, two bogeys and made an 18-footer for birdie on No. 7 to close the front nine at even. Chen hit her 60-degree wedge from 78 yards on No. 11 and connected on the 5-foot birdie putt to get to 1-under. She closed with six pars and a bogey on No. 15 to finish even for the day. Chen hit a season-best 17 greens in the final round and 12 fairways. Â
Duke is the reigning NCAA Champions as the Blue Devils won the 2019 title in Fayetteville, Ark., and head coach
Dan Brooks has led Duke to seven overall national titles, which is the most by any coach in NCAA history. Â
