SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The NCAA Championship run for the Duke women's golf team came to an end Tuesday afternoon at the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., as the Blue Devils dropped a 5-0 decision to third-seeded Oklahoma State.
Duke jumped out to a solid start as senior
Jaravee Boonchant, freshman
Phoebe Brinker and freshman
Anne Chen held leads, but the Cowgirls stormed back and took control of all five matches late to take the victory.
"Hats off to Oklahoma State though, they played some great golf," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks. "That match was really something. They are a strong team."
The Blue Devils were making their fourth appearance in the semifinals out of five times Duke has moved on to the match play portion of the championship.
After totaling an impressive victory in the morning, junior
Gina Kim went up against fourth-ranked Maja Stark. Stark collected five birdies over 15 holes and totaled a 4&3 win. Kim, who is from Chapel Hill, N.C., cut into the lead numerous times, but trailed for the entire match.
The Cowgirls were able to go ahead, 2-0, as Isabella Fierro posted a 2&1 victory over Blue Devil sophomore
Erica Shepherd. The match was tied for the first three holes, but a bogey on No. 4 by Shepherd gave Fierro her first lead. After trailing by as many as three holes through No. 8, Shepherd rallied by birding No. 9 and notching a par on No. 12.
Trailing by one after No. 13, Shepherd just couldn't get the putts to drop. The Greenwood, Ind., product rolled in a 14-foot birdie on No. 17, but Fierro matched her to close the contest.
Needing one more point to clinch the victory, Oklahoma State's Rina Tatematsu rallied against Duke's Brinker to collect a 3&2 win. Brinker, a native of Wilmington, Del., won No. 1 and led after two holes, but bogeys on No. 3 and No. 4 gave Tatematsu a 1UP lead. A par by Brinker on No. 5 evened the match, but Tatematsu birdied No. 9 and never trailed the rest of the way.
Chen, who is from Sugar Land, Texas, led for 10 out of the first 12 holes against Lianna Bailey, but dropped No. 12 and No. 14 to fall behind by one. By draining a birdie on No. 17, Chen had cut the lead to 1UP by Bailey when the match was clinched.
Seeing action in her third NCAA Championship, Boonchant held a 2UP lead through four holes against Madison Hinson-Tolchard, but the Cowgirl would battle back to take her first lead with a birdie on No. 12. Boonchant, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, just couldn't get the putts to drop late to make a run. The match was abandoned on hole 16 when Oklahoma State clinched the win.
Duke closed a very successful season by winning the ACC Championship, Gamecock Intercollegiate and the Cavalier Match Play, while also dealing with the craziness of COVID-19. Kim and Shepherd both won individual tournament titles.
"We just had a great group of people working hard and that is why they had great success," said Brooks. "They were semifinalists at nationals, we won the conference championship, we won the individual conference championship. We just had some really good moments throughout the season. We have every reason to feel great about it."
The Blue Devils will return five letterwinners for 2021-22, while Boonchant will look to turn professional at some point this summer.
