ATHENS, Ga. – In its first NCAA postseason appearance, the No. 13-seeded Duke softball team picked up a 2-0 victory against UNC Greensboro to open the Athens Regional on Friday afternoon at Jack Turner Stadium.
The Blue Devils (43-10) capitalized early, scoring a run in both the first and second innings, and used strong pitching to hold off the Spartans (34-16). Each team recorded four hits as junior
Deja Davis, sophomore
Gisele Tapia and junior
Kyla Morris singled while junior
Caroline Jacobsen hit a home run for Duke.
Junior
Shelby Walters notched her 18th win in her five-inning appearance and senior

Davis started the Blue Devils' offense with a leadoff single to right field, breaking the single-season hits record previously set by
Raine Wilson in 2018. She picked up a stolen base and Tapia laid down a stellar sacrifice bunt just fair, reaching on an overthrow by the catcher which allowed Davis to score Duke's first run of the day in the bottom of the opening frame (1-0).
Duke doubled its lead in the second inning as Jacobsen blasted a solo shot off the scoreboard, giving the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead with her sixth long ball of the 2021 season.
Walters retired the first eight Spartan batters before UNC Greensboro saw its first two baserunners on back-to-back singles in the third, but the runners were stranded in scoring position on a groundout. UNC Greensboro had two on in the fourth on a walk and one hit, but Walters got out of the jam with her third punchout of the game.
Entering in relief in the sixth, St. George retired all six batters faced and tallied two strikeouts.
Duke returns to action tomorrow and will play the winner of Georgia vs. Western Kentucky at 12 p.m. TV designation is TBD.
