DURHAM, N.C. – For the third time in program history, the Duke rowing team will compete at the NCAA Championships, as the No. 17 Blue Devils earned an at-large bid to the 2021 regatta held in Sarasota, Fla., from May 28-30.
"With last season cut short, and this season's limitations, I'm so excited for our team to get a few more championship-level races," head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno said. "They've worked incredibly hard and I'm excited to let them battle with some great teams."
Duke's appearance comes as its third since 2016 -- Cooke Carcagno's first season in Durham. The Blue Devils won two races in the C Final that year and finished 17th in the team standings, and followed up with a 16th-place showing at the 2019 championships.
The Blue Devils are three days removed from a silver-medal performance at the ACC Championship in Clemson, S.C. Duke captured 84 points as a team, with the Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight boats each finishing second in their respective races. V8 crew members
Gabriella Salvati and
Sydney Johnson were named to the All-ACC First Team for the first time in their careers, while graduate student
Tara Fagan picked up All-ACC Second Team accolades for the second time (2019).
The Blue Devils were selected as one of 12 at-large teams alongside Alabama, Brown, California, Ohio State, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Tennessee, Washington State and Wisconsin.
The 10 programs that earned automatic bids by winning their conference championships were Gonzaga (West Coast), Marist (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), Michigan (Big Ten), Navy (Patriot League), Northeastern (Colonial Athletic Association), Rhode Island (Atlantic 10), Southern Methodist (AAC), Texas (Big 12), Virginia (ACC), Washington (Pac-12).
Duke enters the championships as the No. 12 seed in both the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight events, while the Varsity Four boat earned the No. 8 seed.
Competition begins Friday, May 28 at 8:30 a.m. ET. More information on the NCAA Rowing Championships will be available on GoDuke.com prior to the start of the regatta.
