DURHAM – Duke University women's basketball associate athletic trainer
Catherine Lass has been selected as the athletic trainer for the 2021 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Cup Team, which will travel to Debrecen, Hungary Aug. 7-19 for the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup. Â
Lass joined the Duke staff in July of 2019 and has covered the women's basketball team since her arrival. Â
"I'm grateful for this opportunity to work with USA Basketball," said Lass. "I'm proud to represent Duke and Duke basketball. Basketball is the livelihood of Duke University and it's exciting to be a part of it. And I'm blessed to be a part of this program. At the end of the day, this is the best of the best, I'm working with the best of the best, and I'm happy to be here."
Over the weekend, Lass spent three days in Denver, Colo., attending the USA Basketball Women's U19 World Cup Team Trials. Â
"A lot of times we look at the USA honor through the prism of the players and the coaches," said Duke women's basketball head coach
Kara Lawson. "And obviously, as a player, it's an unbelievable honor to be invited out here. And as a coach it's an unbelievable honor. The same applies for the medical staff. To get asked to represent your country, to be charged with the care of some of the best basketball players in the world. So, we're thrilled for Cat. I'm thrilled for the opportunity for her, to continue to grow, to continue to work with the best and I know she's going to represent us at Duke in a first-class way, which is what USA Basketball is all about. We're cheering for her and hoping that the team brings home the gold."
Prior to her arrival in Durham, Lass spent eight years at Seton Hall as she covered multiple sports, including women's basketball, while also serving as an associate professor teaching graduate-level courses on athletic training. Â
Lass earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Exercise Science with a concentration in strength and conditioning in 2011 from Springfield College. She also holds a graduate degree from Seton Hall with a Master of Science in Athletic Training.
