DURHAM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team secured a 13-12 victory over No. 12 Maryland on Sunday afternoon in second round action of the NCAA Championship.
With the victory, the Blue Devils advance to their 16th NCAA quarterfinal appearance under the direction of head coach
Kerstin Kimel. Duke (11-7) advances to the quarterfinal game for the first time since 2015.
"I had a lot of faith in our team," Kimel said. "I'm just so proud of our kids. I mean, no one on this team has made it to the quarterfinals, including
Gabby Rosenzweig. She's never made it out of the first weekend. And so for us, having been out of the tournament since 2016, this is such a testament to how hard our kids have worked and how hard they competed. At this time of the year, it's all about survive and advance. That last 15 minutes was not the prettiest version of lacrosse that we can play, but it was enough to win. And I'll take it."
Duke was held without a goal for the final 20 minutes and Maryland tallied six goals in the second to pull within one (13-12) late in the contest. The Terps had a last second opportunity to tie the game as Libby May got a good look at the cage but Duke goalkeeper
Sophia LeRose was solid all day and collected her 11th save to secure the win. LeRose added three ground balls as well.
Offensively, Duke was once again led by rookie
Katie DeSimone with four goals and graduate student
Gabby Rosenzweig with five points off two goals and three assists. In the Blue Devils' two games this weekend, the dangerous duo of DeSimone and Rosenzweig combined for 22 points.
On Sunday, Duke also received goal contributions from
Catriona Barry (1),
Catherine Cordrey (1),
Olivia Carner (1),
Eva Greco (1),
Maddie Jenner (1),
Anna Callahan (1) and
Abby Landry (1). Barry and
Caroline DeBellis each dished an assist in Duke's well-rounded showing.
The Blue Devils' defensive unit has stepped up all year and continued to do so today as sophomore
Cubby Biscardi caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls and draw controls.
Callie Humphrey collected four ground balls and two caused turnovers as Duke closed in on Maryland's offense. Carner got it done on both ends of the field as she added two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in her all-around performance.
Maryland was first on the board as Brindi Griffin, younger sister of Duke assistant coach
Brooke Griffin, found the back of the cage. Duke then used a 3-0 run that was led by Rosenzweig's two quick assists to take the early 3-1 lead at the 24:36 mark. The two squads would trade the next six goals (6-4) as both teams found their offensive rhythm. With 14 minutes remaining in the first, the Terps charged to the cage and knocked on the door but LeRose was locked in for a save and helped turn defense into offense as Cordrey quickly scored to give Duke a two-goal lead (6-4) halfway through the first.
DeSimone and Rosenzweig connected for the second time in the game with less than two minutes left before Rosenzweig found one final one of her own to give Duke a three-goal lead (9-6) at the break.
The Blue Devils started the second half scoring four of the next five goals to open the game up at 13-7 with 20 minutes remaining. Maryland would not go away, scoring five unanswered goals to pull within one in the final 90 seconds.
The final minutes featured three timeouts as Maryland pulled its goalkeeper Emily Sterling to play with an extra defender. Grace Griffin caused a turnover on Duke's offensive end, as Maryland cleared it and had a good look at the tying goal but LeRose deflected the shot high to send Duke to the quarterfinals.
Maryland won the ground ball game (17-14) while Duke secured the battle of the draw control (14-13), led by Jenner with nine.
The Terps were led by May with six points (4 goals, 2 assists) and Catie May with five points (2 goals, 3 assists).
Duke will travel to Evanston, Ill., to take on No. 2 Northwestern on Saturday, May 22 at 1 p.m.
