DURHAM – The 21st-ranked Duke softball team will make its first NCAA appearance in program history as the Blue Devils were selected as the No. 13 national seed and top seed in the Athens Regional of the 2021 NCAA Softball Championship. Regionals will run May 21-23 at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Ga.
No. 1 Duke (42-10) is slated to play No. 4 UNC Greensboro (34-15) on Friday, May 21, at 12 p.m. on ACC Network. Host site Georgia (29-21) earned the second seed and will play No. 3 Western Kentucky (31-13) at 2:30 p.m.
The winner of the double-elimination NCAA Regional will move on to the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional, May 27-30, against the winner of the Gainesville Regional. The Women's College World Series will be played in Oklahoma City, Okla., June 3-9.
Due to COVID-19, the selection committee chose 20 predetermined sites and announced the 16 on Sunday. The Blue Devils were not one of the 20 predetermined sites, but they did earn a national seed.
Duke claimed the ACC's automatic bid into the tournament after winning its first ACC title with a 1-0 shutout against top-seeded Clemson. The third-seeded Blue Devils opened the ACC Championship with a 4-3 win versus No. 6 Louisville in the quarterfinal and rallied for a 4-3 comeback victory versus No. 2 Florida State in the semifinal.
