CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Playing in his first career NCAA Tournament game, Duke attackman
Michael Sowers recorded eight points to lead the second-seeded Blue Devils to a 16-10 win over High Point in the first round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon on Dorrance Field.
Duke (13-2) advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 18th time in program history. High Point ends its season with an 8-6 overall record after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Sowers finished his evening with four goals and four assists, marking the 11th time in program history a Blue Devil has registered at least eight points in a NCAA Tournament game. The eight points push his career total to 377, leaving him four shy of taking over the No. 2 spot on the NCAA career scoring charts.
Freshman faceoff specialist
Jake Naso was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 19-of-26, picking up 13 ground balls and scoring a goal in his first career postseason contest.
It was a slow start to the game for both teams as Duke led 1-0 with less than five minutes to play in the first quarter. Then Sowers took over and had a hand in Duke's next three goals in 1:35 for a 4-0 lead at the 2:13 mark. The veteran attackman had two unassisted goals during that stretch and assisted rookie
Brennan O'Neill on the third.
High Point's Brayden Mayea capitalized on a Duke turnover with eight seconds to go in the opening frame to put the Panthers on the board as the Blue Devils headed into the first break with a 4-1 advantage.
Duke and High Point traded goals in the second quarter, but it was a three-goal spurt in a span of 2:57 that stretched the Blue Devil lead to 10-4. All three goals were scored by different players with
Sean Lowrie,
Nakeie Montgomery and Naso getting into the mix. Lowrie finished his day with three goals on four shots.
Once again Mayea threw in a goal in the waning seconds of the period to make it a 10-5 contest at halftime. He ended the game with two goals and an assist.
Duke pushed the lead to eight goals, 15-7, in the final quarter before a fourth-quarter run by the Panthers pulled High Point back within five. Jack Vanoverbeke had two of the three goals, finishing his night with two tallies and an assist.
Duke junior
Owen Caputo capped the day for the Blue Devils with the game's final goal at 2:39, sending the Blue Devils into the next round.
Twelve Blue Devils made their NCAA Tournament debuts. O'Neill had two goals and three points, while Caputo had a pair of markers. Montgomery scored one and dished out one assist and
Dyson Williams extended his goal streak to 21 games with one tally.
In goal, Adler was excellent with 14 saves, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Defensively, Duke held High Point's leading scorer Asher Nolting to one goal and three assists, over a point lower than his season average of 5.25 points per game.
