LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Third-seeded Duke used a two-run rally in the seventh inning to secure a 4-3 comeback victory against No. 2 Florida State to advance to the program's first ACC Championship title game.
With the victory, the No. 21 Blue Devils (41-10) picked up their first program win over the No. 7 Seminoles (39-10-1). Duke is set to face top-seeded Clemson tomorrow, May 15, at 12 p.m. on ESPN.
Down 3-2 at the top of the final frame, junior
Caroline Jacobsen started the rally with a single to center field. Freshman
Sarah Goddard entered to pinch run and she moved to second as junior
Kyla Morris drew a walk. Sophomore
Gisele Tapia stepped up to the plate and ripped a shot to left center, scoring Goddard from second to knot the game at 2-2 for classmate
Kamryn Jackson. Jackson, who went 2-for-3 on the day, sent a sacrifice to left field as Morris recorded the game-winning run (4-3).
Senior
Peyton St. George (18-6) had a strong showing in the circle, pitching a complete game for her 18th win of the 2021 campaign. The Mechanicsville, Va., native let up six hits, two unearned runs and struck out four batters. Duke's defense turned two double plays in the contest, upping their season total to 22, and retired the final Florida State side to secure the win.
Tapia got the bats going for Duke in the first inning with a single to right field and advanced to second on a bobbled ball. Senior
Jameson Kavel brought in Duke's first run on a hit lost in the sun at second base as Tapia used heads-up baserunning to score. Freshman
Kelly Torres hit an infield single to shortstop which plated Kavel to give Duke a 2-0 lead.
Florida State answered in the home half with a solo home run from Sydney Sherrill, cutting its deficit to 2-1.
With two outs in the fifth, Jackson garnered her second single of the game through the right side. Kavel sent a shot deep to right center, but a catch was made near the warning track.
The Seminoles used three hits to tie the ballgame at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame and took a 3-2 lead on a Duke error. St. George tallied her third strikeout to end the inning and strand two Florida State runners.
Following a scoreless sixth, the Blue Devils plated two runs to jump ahead, 4-3. Duke's defense held strong with two lineouts and a flyout to move on to the ACC Championship game.
