LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time in program history, three-seeded Duke advances to the ACC Semifinals with a 4-3 triumph over six-seeded Louisville on Thursday night at Ulmer Stadium. The win marks Duke's first victory in the ACC Championship.
The No. 21 Blue Devils hit the 40-win mark on the season, improving to 40-10 in the 2021 campaign and extending their winning streak to 13 games. The Cardinals end their year with a 21-28-1 record.
Although Duke only had three hits in the contest, they were crucial extra-base hits. Junior
Kristina Foreman hit a home run, senior
Rachel Crabtree recorded a double and junior
Deja Davis tripled.
Senior pitcher
Peyton St. George (17-6) notched her 17th win this season, throwing 5.2 innings in relief in which she let up two hits and fanned three Cardinal batters. Junior
Shelby Walters started in the circle, pitching 1.1 frames in which she let up four hits, three runs and two walks.
Duke led off the contest with walks from Davis and senior
Jameson Kavel. The pair were brought home as Foreman continued her hot streak at the plate, sending a three-run homer down the left field line off the camera platform to give the Blue Devils an early 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals knotted it up at 3-3 in the top half of the second, scoring three runs on four hits and a sacrifice fly.
The Blue Devils took back the lead in the fourth as Crabtree sent an RBI double to the wall in left center, bringing home Foreman who reached on a six-pitch walk (4-3).
Freshman
Kelly Torres made an impressive double play to end the top of the fifth frame, catching a ball in foul territory and gunning it to Foreman to tag out the runner. Davis registered her first hit of the game with a triple to right center, breaking the single-season record. She looked to make it a 5-3 game on a fielder's choice by sophomore
Gisele Tapia but was caught in a rundown.
Beating out a throw at first, Louisville had the tying run on first in the top of the seventh. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, but a flyout and groundout would secure the Blue Devils' victory.
Duke returns to action tomorrow against two-seeded Florida State at 3:30 p.m. The game will be available to watch on ACC Network with Pam Ward and Jenny Dalton-Hill on the call.
