DURHAM – Junior
Kristina Foreman capped off No. 22 Duke's three-run seventh inning rally as she sent a walk-off single to left field to secure the series sweep with a 4-3 victory over North Carolina Sunday afternoon at the Duke Softball Stadium.
The Blue Devils (34-10, 22-10 ACC) garnered their fourth ACC sweep of the 2021 campaign and the first in program history against the Tar Heels (12-23, 8-17).
Duke's offense was spearheaded by Foreman and senior
Jameson Kavel as the duo both recorded 3-for-4 performances, while Kavel led the team with three RBIs.
Junior
Shelby Walters started in the circle and tossed five complete innings, only letting up two hits and three unearned runs while tallying four strikeouts. Entering in relief, senior
Peyton St. George (14-6) shut down North Carolina in the final two frames of the game behind a trio of Ks to notch her 14th win of the year.
Duke took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior
Deja Davis opened the contest with a lead-off bunt single on a three-ball count. Kavel lined a shot just out of reach of North Carolina's center fielder for her first hit of the day, bringing Davis across home plate (1-0).
Following three scoreless frames, the Tar Heels broke up the no-hitter as they capitalized on two hits and two Duke errors to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth. The Blue Devils looked to answer in the bottom half with a pair of runners in scoring position, but back-to-back fly outs ended the Duke threat.
St. George struck out the side in the top of the seventh, sending the Blue Devils to the home half looking for their second walk-off win of the weekend. Davis sent a lead-off single through the right side, setting up another round of seventh-inning heroics from Kavel as she knotted the ballgame at 3-3 with a two-run blast to right.
Duke kept the hits coming, loading the bases for Foreman with three consecutive base knocks from senior
Sydney Bolan, sophomore
Kamryn Jackson and freshman
Kelly Torres. Foreman secured the 4-3 Duke victory with a walk-off RBI single to shallow left field, pushing pinch runner
Kendyl Lange across home plate.
The Blue Devils will take a break for exam week and return for their Senior Night home finale against Campbell on Wednesday, May 5. The midweek contest will be available to watch on ACC Network Extra.
