DURHAM – For the fifth time this season, a Blue Devil has been named the ACC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week as close defenseman
JT Giles-Harris garnered the weekly recognition as announced by the conference office. The two-year captain also was named to the USILA Team of the Week for his efforts in the win at Virginia last week.
Giles-Harris is the fourth different Blue Devil to win the honor, joining
Tyler Carpenter,
Mike Adler and
Jake Naso. Duke has won five of the 10 weekly defensive awards, more than any other ACC school. It is Giles-Harris' fourth career weekly recognition.
Considered the nation's top defenseman, Giles-Harris was exceptional again as the No. 3 Blue Devils outlasted Virginia 13-12 in overtime. He finished the night with one caused turnover, two ground balls and a crucial assist on a full-field pass to
Brennan O'Neill for an 8-7 third-quarter lead.
Matched up against Virginia's top scorer, Matt Moore, Giles-Harris held the Cavalier attackman to just two points, the second fewest for him this season and more than two under his season average. In overtime, the two-time captain was crucial in forcing a Virginia turnover to give Duke the ball back and set up the Blue Devils for the winning possession. Giles-Harris and the Duke defense held the Cavaliers scoreless for the final 18:04, while the 12 goals were tied for the second fewest this year for Virginia.
The 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Giles-Harris is second on the team in caused turnovers (13) and second among defenseman in ground balls (22).
Duke is 11-1 and ranked third nationally. The Blue Devils host No. 2 Notre Dame, Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m., on ACC Network.
