TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Following an adjusted game time due to inclement weather, No. 16 Duke couldn't overcome a three-run deficit in the second inning and fell to No. 9 Florida State, 3-0, Saturday night at the Seminole Softball Complex.
The Blue Devils (27-8, 15-8 ACC) were unable to gain offensive momentum as the Seminoles (26-6, 14-2) limited Duke to only three hits on the evening.
Florida State loaded the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the second. The Seminoles then used a pair of RBI groundouts and an RBI single to jump ahead, 3-0.
In the fifth, junior
Deja Davis reached on an error and sophomore
Gisele Tapia singled to the gap in left field. Duke had the tying run at the plate, but a groundout would end the top half of the frame.
Both teams went down in order in the sixth and Duke's lone base runner in the seventh was freshman
Claire Davidson who reached on a walk.
Despite the three-run inning, junior
Shelby Walters (11-3) kept the Seminoles off the board through the next four frames. The Cohutta, Ga., native threw six complete innings in which she recorded five strikeouts.
Duke and Florida State will close out its series tomorrow with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. on ACC Network Extra and game two will follow at 3 p.m. on ACC Network.
