NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fifth-ranked Notre Dame held top-ranked Duke to eight goals to hand the Blue Devils a 13-8 loss Saturday afternoon in ACC men's lacrosse action at Arlotta Stadium. The loss is the first for the Blue Devils this season.
Rookie
Brennan O'Neill led the way for the Blue Devils offensively with three goals, while senior
Nakeie Montgomery had four assists. Freshman faceoff specialist
Jake Naso was outstanding again at the faceoff X, winning 16-of-22 draws and picking up eight ground balls.
Duke falls to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action, while Notre Dame moved to 6-1 and 2-1 in ACC play.
The first half was nip and tuck between the two teams as the Blue Devils scored first before Notre Dame answered with three unanswered for a 3-1 advantage. Duke junior
Owen Caputo made it a one-goal game to send the Blue Devils into the first break of the afternoon trailing by one.
After Notre Dame opened up a 5-2 lead midway through the second quarter, Duke's offense responded in a big way with three goals in 3:08 to tie the game 5-5. However, the Irish turned the tables with two goals in nine seconds to head into halftime with a 7-5 lead.
O'Neill started the spurt with an absolute rocket of a goal, while sophomore
Dyson Williams pulled the Blue Devils within one off a spectacular feed from Montgomery
. Rookie
Charlie O'Connor stepped up and tied the game off a
Michael Sowers pass.
The Fighting Irish were outstanding in the first half, forcing 13 Duke turnovers and holding the Blue Devils to only 17 shots.
Coming out of the break, senior captain
Joe Robertson got Duke back to within one again on an extra-man goal, but that would be as close as the Blue Devils could get as Notre
Dame scored five straight to take a 12-6 lead at the 11:57 mark of the fourth quarter. Robertson finished his day with two goals.
Wheaton Jackoboice scored twice in the 5-0 run and finished the afternoon with three goals. Morrison Mirer led Notre Dame with four goals.
Notre Dame held the Blue Devils scoreless for 13:59 during the 5-0 run before O'Neill scored his third of the stay to stop the spurt.
Duke tacked on a final goal in the final eight seconds from Robertson. The Blue Devils' eight goals are the fewest this season as Notre Dame held Duke to 36 shots for the game. Duke won the ground ball battle, 25-22.
The Blue Devil defense held Pat Kavanagh to just one goal and one assist, well off his average of six points per game.
Tyler Carpenter scooped four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
In goal,
Mike Adler made 11 saves, while Notre Dame's Liam Enenmann had 12 saves for the win.
Duke has a quick turnaround, traveling to No. 4 Virginia April 15. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network.
