DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore
Sophie Jones was tapped to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week Honorable Mention list Tuesday, after scoring her second goal of the season in the No. 5 Blue Devils' 3-2 loss at No. 7 West Virginia on Saturday, March 27.
With her team facing a 2-0 deficit nearing the end of the first half, Jones found herself on the receiving end of a ball sent across the box by freshman
Emily Royson. Jones took the feed and delivered a shot into the back of the net to bring the Blue Devils back to within one at the 42:20 mark.
After not scoring a goal in her first 24 career matches, the Menlo Park, Calif., native now has two in back-to-back games, as she netted her first goal as a Blue Devil in the 6-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, March 17.
With two goals and three assists this season, Jones ranks sixth on the team with seven points. Known for her all-around abilities and playmaking skills, Jones entered the spring campaign with a number of national recognitions. She was included on the watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in the country, and was also added to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's Preseason Best XI Second Team.
After starting all 11 games during the fall regular season, Jones picked up All-ACC First Team honors and went on to garner ACC All-Tournament status.
Jones becomes the eighth Blue Devil to earn a total of 11 weekly recognitions from TopDrawerSoccer.com this season.
Duke (9-5-2) looks to get back in the win column when it heads to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
