DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men's lacrosse attackman Michael Sowersand faceoff specialist Jake Nasopicked up a few weekly awards following their performances in the Blue Devils' 15-14 win over No. 4 Syracuse last week. Sowers was voted the ACC Offensive Player of the Week, while Naso collected multiple awards, including ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Naso also was tabbed the US Lacrosse Division I Men's National Player of the Week and selected to the USILA Team of the Week for his standout showing at the X versus the Orange. These are the first career weekly honors for Naso and the second ACC weekly accolade for Sowers.
Duke's leading scorer heading into ACC play, Sowers continued to show why he's one of the best attackman in the country as he put up three goals and three assists to help the Blue Devils to victory. With Duke trailing 14-13 in the fourth quarter, Sowers provided an assist to sophomore Dyson Williamson a man-up opportunityto tie the game, 14-14. Just over two minutes later, Sowers took a pass from junior Owen Caputoand scored while getting hit to give the Blue Devils the lead for good.
Sowers pushed his career points total to 352 to rank sixth in NCAA history, while his 210 assists rank fourth. He is 22 assists away from breaking the NCAA career record held by Pat Spencer and 49 points shy of the NCAA career scoring record.
Naso dominated the action at the faceoff X, winning a career-high 24-of-32 restarts and picking up a career-best 14 ground balls. Additionally, the native of Holtsville, N.Y., added a goal during Duke's 7-0 run that put it ahead, 12-5, in the second quarter.
After taking just one faceoff in the season opener, Naso has taken 76 percent (179-of-237) of the team's draws and has won 121 of them. He currently ranks second in the ACC and eighth nationally in faceoff percentage (.672) and leads the ACC in ground balls (8.11/gm).
The Blue Devils returned to the top spot in the polls following the win and will host No. 2 North Carolina Thursday night. It will be the first time the two teams have met when ranked Nos. 1 and 2. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
