AWENDAW, S.C. – Led by the 1-under score from senior
Adrien Pendaries, the Duke men's golf team opened the Hootie Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay in ninth place as a team on Sunday in Awendaw, S.C.
Pendaries is tied for 16th on the individual leaderboard, three strokes back of a four-way tie at the top at 4-under par. Kent State's 10-under score leads the 16-team standings through 18 holes, followed by Missouri (-6), Auburn (-5), Purdue (-3) and Wisconsin (-1) in the top five.
Along with Pendaries, two Blue Devil freshmen also find themselves inside the top 30 as
Ian Siebers and
Jimmy Zheng each carded rounds of even-par 72 on Monday and are tied for 26th. Graduate captain
Steven DiLisio shot 2-over 74 and is tied for 47th, while seniors
Evan Katz and
Qi wen Wong each posted scores of 5-over 77 and are tied for 78th.
Pendaries opened his round on fire with birdies on three of the first four holes. The senior's steady opening round included those three birdies and 13 pars as he signed in red figures at 1-under 71. Siebers birdied the 15th to get back to even par and parred his way in to post 72. Zheng's round featured four birdies and four bogeys for his 72.
Duke shot 1-over 289 as a team in the first round and is in ninth place, but just 11 strokes off the lead on a tightly-packed leaderboard.
The 54-hole tournament continues Monday and Tuesday at the Bulls Bay GC. Monday's second round is underway at 9 a.m. and the Blue Devils will be out first and paired with the co-hosts South Carolina and the College of Charleston. Live scoring is available from BirdieFire.
