STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Duke fencing team closed out its 2021 season Sunday at the NCAA Fencing Championship as all five Blue Devil women collected All-America accolades in their respective weapons.
The Blue Devils finished third in the team standings with 130 points, their best finish in program history. The performance today marks Duke's 10th top-10 finish in the past 11 seasons.
Notre Dame claimed the National Championship with 201 points followed by Penn State with 182.
In all, nine of Duke's 10 participants in the NCAA Championship this season came away with All-America honors.
Rookie
Christina Ferrari headlined the last day of action for Duke as she placed fifth overall in foil, just one spot short of qualifying for the semifinals. Ferrari won 15 of her 20 bouts for a .750 win percentage and becomes the first Blue Devil women's foilist to earn the honor while competing on the national stage. Last year,
Zoe Superville was awarded the honor by qualifying as the championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Right behind Ferrari was
Alex Gorman in saber, finishing sixth. The Wellesley, Mass., native registered 14 wins to earn her second All-America accolade.
Also notching All-America status was
Lulu Tang with a 10th-place finish in foil along with
Anneke Zegers in saber as she placed 10th. Rounding out Duke's All-America day was epeeist
Sarah Lurye with a 12-place showing.
