NEED TO KNOW
- No. 5 Duke faces a top-10 road test when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. for a matchup with No. 7 West Virginia on Saturday at 3 p.m.
- The Blue Devils opened their five-match spring slate with back-to-back nonconference wins, outscoring their opponents 9-0 over the two games to improve to 9-4-2 on the season.
- Freshman Olivia Migli netted two goals in Duke's 6-0 home win over Coastal Carolina on March 17. Her six goals this season lead the team, are tied for first among ACC freshmen and tied for fourth among all freshmen nationally.
- Migli, senior Tess Boade and junior Marykate McGuire are tied for the team lead with 12 points.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Ruthie Jones collected her seventh shutout win of the season last Wednesday, which ranks second in the conference and is tied for third in the NCAA.
DUKE VS. WEST VIRGINIA
Duke faces West Virginia for the sixth time in program history and the first time since Sept. 8, 2017.
The Blue Devils are 2-1-0 in Morgantown, including a 4-0 victory over the then-No. 3 Mountaineers in the series' last matchup.
Duke and West Virginia played twice in the 2016 season, with WVU taking each contest. The second match came in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament -- a 1-0 Mountaineer win.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
West Virginia went 7-2-0 in the fall season, playing against only Big 12 opponents, and kicked off the spring with a win at Saint Joseph's for a total record of 8-2-0 in 2020-21.
The Mountaineers boast a stout defensive unit that has yielded just nine goals in 10 matches. They allowed two goals in a game only one time this season -- a 2-1 double overtime loss to then-No. 6 Oklahoma State.
Senior midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel leads the West Virginia offense with six goals and 14 points, while junior forward Alina Stahl is coming off a two-goal performance against Saint Joseph's. Sophomore Kayza Massey took over goaltending duties in October and has posted a 5-1-0 record with 10 saves and five goals allowed.
DUKE AWAY FROM HOME
The Blue Devils have gone 5-2-0 when playing on the road this season, including victories in their last two road matches.
Of the five road wins, Duke has shut out its opponent in three -- 1-0 at Boston College (Oct. 15), 4-0 at Syracuse (Oct. 18) and 3-0 at UNCW (March 6).
The five victories away from home are the most by the Blue Devils since the 2017 season. Duke will face one more road test after Saturday's match when it travels to NC State on Friday, April 2.
LAST TIME OUT: DUKE 6, COASTAL CAROLINA 0
The Blue Devils netted three goals in the opening 12 minutes of play and never looked back in a 6-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, March 17 at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke had not played at home since Oct. 9 -- the 160 days between home games is the longest such gap within a season in program history.
Freshman
Olivia Migli scored just 5:08 into the match, marking the quickest goal in a game this season for Duke. Migli added another at the 12:10 mark to give her team a commanding 3-0 lead.
Junior
Mackenzie Pluck scored her first goal of the season and dished out two assists in 45 minutes of action. Fellow junior
Delaney Graham also had two helpers in the first half, increasing her assist total on the season to four.
Sophomore
Sophie Jones recorded her first career goal off a give-and-go play with Pluck that made it 4-0 just under 25 minutes in. Senior
Tess Boade was then able to beat the clock with her fifth goal of the season at the 39:29 mark.

LEADING THE ACC IN ASSISTS
The Duke offense has been fueled by unselfish play this season, as the team's 31 assists lead the ACC and rank third in the NCAA.
Junior
Marykate McGuire paces the team with six helpers, while eight players have recorded two or more assists. The Blue Devils had five assists on six goals against Coastal Carolina last week, led by two each from juniors
Mackenzie Pluck and
Delaney Graham.
In the spring opener at UNCW on March 6, Duke registered four assists from four different players.
COMING OUT HOT
Duke has used early goals in both the first and second half this season to help establish a quick advantage. Of the 14 goals the Blue Devils have scored in the first half, eight have come in the first 15 minutes of play.

The Blue Devils have scored 10 goals in the second half of games this season, with seven coming within the first 20 minutes out of halftime and four scored in the opening six minutes of the period.
Freshman
Grace Watkins increased the Blue Devil lead to 3-0 at UNCW (3/6) when she scored her first career goal at the 48:31 mark of the match.
Tess Boade scored 1:20 into the second half in the season opener at Wake Forest (9/10), while Migli made it a 3-1 game at Miami (11/1) 2:58 into the frame.
NOTING DUKE
- The Blue Devils are 9-0-0 on the season when scoring first and 0-4-1 when the opponent scores first.
- Duke is 6-0 when leading at the half.
- Duke's four losses on the season have come to No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 North Carolina, dropping a pair of matches against each opponent.
- After being limited to just three goals between them in the first 14 matches this season, the junior tandem of Marykate McGuire and Mackenzie Pluck each had a tally in the win over Coastal Carolina. The pair combined for 17 goals in 2019.
- With two goals and an assist in the opening two games of the spring campaign, senior Tess Boade now owns 35 points in four years at Duke.
- Senior Taylor Mitchell has played 7,178 minutes over four years and ranks eighth in all-time minutes played at Duke.
- Fellow senior defender Caitlin Cosme played 300 minutes in eight matches her first two seasons at Duke, but has played 35 matches and 3,127 minutes over the last two years.Â
- In a fall season that was shortened due to COVID-19, sophomore goalkeeper Ruthie Jones still logged five shutouts, which ranked third in the ACC at the end of the calendar year.Â
- On Oct. 13, Duke climbed to No. 5 in the national rankings for the first time since week 10 of the 2018 season. The Blue Devils' No. 4 national ranking a week later was the highest in a regular season poll since 2017.
- Duke finished the fall portion of the regular season with five consecutive road games, notching a 3-2 record over the contests. The Blue Devils are 5-2 on the season when playing away from home.
- Duke had to come from behind in its first two matches to open the season. The Blue Devils scored the tying goal with two minutes left at Wake Forest in the season opener before winning in overtime, and tied Virginia one week later with a goal in the 60th minute.

Mackenzie Pluck is coming off a two-assist effort against Coastal Carolina. Her five assists on the year are fourth in the conference and tied for 19th in the nation.
