DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's lacrosse program is excited to continue its partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute.
The Blue Devils are dedicating their home contest on Sunday, March 28 against Notre Dame to the Duke Cancer Institute medical staff, patients and families.
The Duke women's lacrosse program has had a partnership with the Duke Cancer Institute for several years and is continuing it by selecting both Dr. Brittany Davidson and nurse Kimberly Ross as honorary captains for the game to highlight the work they do with Ovarian Cancer Patients during Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. Davidson and Ross have been part of the Duke family for over six years.
We also are recognizing them as frontline workers caring for patients with cancer through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cancer patients & COVID: "Being a healthcare worker during COVID has been quite stressful," Ross said. "Our patients are very worried about getting COVID while on treatment. Those who are in surveillance are hesitant to come to appointments due to the fear of COVID. There is also the worry/stress of keeping staff and patients safe while in the building, and potentially taking germs home to our families."
Tip to protect yourself: "Trust your instincts," Davidson said. "Many of the symptoms of ovarian cancer are vague -- abdominal bloating, nausea and trouble eating more than a few bites. If something feels wrong, talk to your doctor. If you have a family history of ovarian cancer, make sure your doctor knows -- you may need genetic testing."
