CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Behind 13 saves by the Virginia goaltender, the 10th-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team fell to the ninth-ranked Cavaliers, 14-11, Sunday afternoon to close out the weekend at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Devils split the weekend after beating the Cavaliers Friday, 17-8.
With the setback, the Blue Devils drop to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Cavalier defense came up big as goalie Charlie Campbell registered a season-high 13 saves on 24 of Duke's shots on goal.
Duke was led by
Olivia Carner with three goals, followed by
Gabby Rosenzweig and
Katie DeSimone with two.
Catherine Cordrey,
Caroline DeBellis,
Abby Landry and
Anna Callahan rounded out Duke's offense with one goal each. Additionally,
Katie Cronin dished two assists in her first game this season without a goal.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair between the two squads with Duke holding a narrow 5-4 lead heading into intermission.
DeSimone led the way with two goals on two shots while Callahan, Carner and Rosenzweig each added one in the opening period. Virginia goalkeeper Campbell had eight saves in the opening half to Duke's one.
Virginia's offense was incredibly efficient in the second half, outscoring Duke, 10-6, despite the Blue Devils holding a 16-12 advantage in shots. The Cavaliers used a 4-0 run over a span of five minutes to give the Cavaliers an 11-8 lead midway through the stanza. Man-up opportunities were key for both teams as Virginia connected on three to Duke's two from Carner and Landry, which cut the Virginia lead to, 11-10, with 9:17 remaining. Rosenzweig notched her second goal of the day at 3:30 remaining, but the Cavaliers scored three of the game's final four goals for the three-goal victory.
Duke won the battle of the draw control, 17-9, led by
Maddie Jenner with nine and was nearly perfect on clears (8-of-9).
Kay Conway, Rosenzweig, Landry and Desimone each grabbed two ground balls.
The Cavaliers were led by Taylor Regan with four goals. Virginia's Ashlyn McGovern and Regan were held scoreless in Friday's contest but contributed to six of the 14 goals today.
Duke will welcome No. 4 Notre Dame to Durham for a 1 p.m., contest on Sunday, March 28.
