STILLWATER, Okla. – Duke men's and women's cross country wrapped up competition at the NCAA Championships on Monday, with the men placing 16th on the 10000m course and the women placing 27th on the 6000m course.
With the 16th-place finish, Duke men's cross country records its best team performance since finishing 14th in 2001. Coming into the competition as one of four unranked teams, the Blue Devils not only bested the unranked group, but outperformed several top-15 teams, including No. 10 Washington, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 13 NC State and No. 14 Gonzaga.
Senior
Alex Miley delivered the best individual performance of the day, taking home 68th-place with a run of 31.11.5. While sitting at just 169th after 2000m, Miley delivered a deliberate charge, including rising from 80th to his final position in the final 1000m to pace the entire Blue Devils lineup. Senior
Josh Romine recorded the other top-100 finish of the day with a mark of 31:30.9 and a 96th-place finish.
On the women's side, senior
Michaela Reinhart led all Blue Devils with a 112th-place finish and a time of 21:33.9. Freshman
Victoria Patterson shined in her NCAA Championships debut, taking home the second-best Blue Devil mark at 142nd with a time of 21:47.5.
Monday's NCAA Championships marked the first time that both teams competed together at the competition since 2012. Head Coach
Rhonda Riley sees the growth continuing for the rising Blue Devil program.
"Duke has never had a combined program under one coach, and I think it shows that they feed off each other in a very positive way and support each other and were able to both get to the championships," said Riley. "I love coaching both genders and they love it too. We are really just getting started as far as Duke Cross Country and know that we have a lot of potential to be a podium team one day."
For most of the cross country roster, the attention will now turn to the outdoor track & field season, beginning with the Bob Davidson Invitational at High Point University. Competition is set to begin on March 19.
