Duke Rowing Recruit Spotlight: Mollie Nicol

DURHAM, N.C. – Head Coach Megan Cooke Carcagno and the Duke rowing program are pleased to announce the addition of Mollie Nicol, who will compete for the Blue Devils in the 2021-22 season.
A native of Wellington, New Zealand, Nicol rows for the Star Boating Club and head coach Roy Pickard. She was a finalist for both the College Sports Wellington Rower of the Year and the overall Sports Woman of the Year in 2020. Nicol helped her U17 quad crew win a gold medal at the 2020 North Island Club Championships as well as the North Island Secondary School Championships (NISS). In the double, she claimed silver at the NISS and took bronze at the North Island Club Championships.
While competing for Queen Margaret College, she won gold in the U15 double sculls at the 2019 Maadi Cup, marking the first time QMC had achieved a first-place result at the regatta.
A multi-sport student-athlete, Nicol also lettered in netball and was a member of the U15 and U17 Wellington Representative teams. She is the daughter of Rob and Nicki Nicol, and has one sister, Pippa.
What is your favorite rowing memory?
MN: My favorite rowing memory is all the friendships that I have made which make rowing even more special. Also winning QMC's first ever MAADI gold medal was truly a highlight.
Why did you choose to row for Duke?
MN: I chose Duke University because it is one of the best student-athlete programs in the world and all of the amazing opportunities it has to offer. The rowing team sounds amazing and I cannot wait to be part of it.
What impact do you plan to make in your first year?
MN: In my first year I am hoping to do the best I can for myself and the team, and row hard.
What about in your four years?
MN: Help Duke win an NCAA championship.
What stuck out to you about the team in your decision making process?
MN: When I was talking to the girls on the team, they each spoke very highly of Duke University and also the rowing program. To me it sounded like the best of both worlds. I also really wanted to be a part of the team environment that the coaches have built and cannot wait to be there.
