- Three of Duke's four wins against the Irish have come in Durham. The Blue Devils have fared well at home against Notre Dame, going 3-1-0.
Last Time We Met
- Notre Dame scored in the 65th minute to edge the Blue Devils 1-0 at Alumni Stadium in 2019. The Fighting Irish outshot Duke 15-6, but only managed four shots on goal. Duke fired one shot on frame and Will Pulisic had three saves.
Close Encounters
- When Notre Dame and Duke meet it is always a close game. All six of the past games have been either ties or decided by a single goal. Four of the six went into overtime with two needing double OT.
In Common
- Duke and Notre Dame share four common opponents in Kentucky, Pitt, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. The Blue Devils went 1-5 against those four teams, playing Kentucky and UNC twice. Notre Dame went 2-3 with victories against Kentucky and Notre Dame.
Breaking Down the Blue Devils
- The Blue Devils are 3-7-2 overall after beating Virginia Tech on the road last week. Duke is 3-4-0 in conference action with the other two wins coming against NC State in the fall.
- Head coach John Kerr has arranged a challenging 2021 slate, featuring three non-conference games against teams ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes in the polls. In all, Duke will play five teams this spring currently ranked in the USC top 25.
- Junior goalkeeper Eliot Hamill has been outstanding in goal for the Blue Devils this spring. After spending the past three seasons behind Will Pulisic, Hamill earned his first start against Charlotte to open spring action. It was the first time the Blue Devils had a new face in net after Will Pulisic started every game since 2017. In three starts and four games overall, Hamill has 15 saves and sports a 0.833 save percentage and a 0.750 goals against average. That would place him tied for 59th among all Division I goalies.
- With a goal and an assist at Virginia Tech, Nick Pariano climbed to the top of the scoring list with two goals and four assists for eight points. Jack Doran, Stephen O'Connell and Daniel Wright all have three goals apiece.
- Creating opportunities hasn't been the issue for Duke as the Blue Devils average 10.17 shots per game – fifth in the ACC. In Duke's four games this spring, it has registered 14, nine, 16 and 11 shots, respectively.
- Matthias Frick and Ian Murphy are the seasoned veterans who anchor the defense. Frick is the leader at center back, while Murphy holds down the left sides. Rookie Antino Lopez solidifies the middle with Frick and Amir Daley holds down the right side.
- Duke's midfield is a talented group, but young in spots. Veteran Jack Doran has returned to the middle of the field as a steady force for the Blue Devils, while senior Stephen O'Connell is a threat from the left side. Joining Doran in the middle is freshman Lewis McGarvey as a holding midfielder. Outstanding in the air, McGarvey joins rookie playmaker and workhorse Peter Stroud as the creator. Stroud is a dynamic player who runs for days and also will play as a withdrawn forward to help fuel the offense. Freshman Nick Pariano is a Duke's super sub, coming off the bench and making an immediate impact. Nicolas Macri, a graduate student with 30 games experience, is strong running down the right side.
About Notre Dame
- Notre Dame comes to Durham with a 6-5-0 overall record and 0-1-0 in ACC contests this spring. The Fighting Irish are coming off a 1-0 overtime loss at Virginia over the weekend.
- Junior forward Jack Lynn leads the offense with seven goals. He ranks third in the ACC despite missing time early in the fall with an injury. The Irish are averaging only 9.6 shots per game and only 3.55 on goal.
- In goal, senior Keagan McLaughlin has seven clean sheets to his name in his 14 career starts. He owns four shutout victories this season. Notre Dame is allowing 1.09 goals and 10.1 shots per game, but has given up just 49 corner kicks.
Pariano Productivity
- While rookie Nick Pariano has started just four games this season, including only two in the fall, the midfielder makes things happen when he steps on. Overall, Pariano has been on the field for eight of Duke's 13 goals this season.
- The Philadelphia native was on the field for six of Duke's nine goals, assisting on three, in the fall portion of the schedule. He came off the bench in three of those contests. Most recently, he came off the bench at Virginia Tech sparked Duke's offense with a goal and an assist.
