DURHAM – Four members of the Duke men's lacrosse team have been selected to the 2021 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday afternoon.
JT Giles-Harris, Nakeie Montgomery, Joe Robertson and
Michael Sowers are among the 55 players recognized.
Duke is tied with Denver with four players voted to the Watch List, while a host of other programs have three. Giles-Harris and Montgomery represented Duke on the list last year, while Sowers was the favorite to win the award as a senior at Princeton in 2020.
All four players are off to stellar starts for the undefeated Blue Devils (7-0). Robertson and Sowers headline the attack unit, combining for 61 points through seven games. Montgomery is Duke's leader at the midfield with 10 goals and 11 assists, joining Sowers as the only Blue Devil to have double-digit goals and assists. On the other end of the field, Giles-Harris is the anchor to a stifling Duke close defense that is holding opponents to 8.29 goals per game.
Giles-Harris, the 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, has nine caused turnovers and 12 ground balls in seven games this season. He most recently forced three turnovers against High Point, pushing his career total to 79. He needs just 10 more to break the Duke career mark of 88 held by Luke Duprey. With Giles-Harris as the leader on defense, Duke has held five of its seven opponents to fewer than 10 goals and six of its foes to 15-plus minute scoring droughts.
Montgomery, a leader on and off the field, is off to the best start of his career with 21 points in seven games, more than he had in eight games in 2020. He currently ranks second on the team in assists and has at least three points in all seven games. A 2019 third team All-America pick, Montgomery needs just 10 more points to reach the century mark.
One of three team captains, Robertson is the motor to Duke's offense. The Salem, Va., native is second on the team with 24 points (19g, 5a) despite playing in just five games. He recently scored seven goals and 10 points overall in the victory over Air Force to become the 21st Blue Devil to register 100 career goals. His 109 career tallies rank 16th on Duke's all-time last and are 31 shy of the top 10.
Sowers has not missed a beat since joining the Blue Devils for his final year of eligibility. He leads Duke with 37 points from 17 goals and 20 assists. Riding a 54-game point streak, Sowers is steadily climbing the NCAA career scoring charts. He currently ranks eighth in career points with 339, while his 201 assists are sixth. He needs 31 more assists to break the NCAA career record held by Pat Spencer of Loyola and 62 points to surpass Lyle Thompson's points mark. For his career, Sowers is averaging 6.28 points and 3.72 assists per game, both of which rank in the top five in NCAA Division I history.
Duke is 7-0, its best start since going 8-0 in 2008, and is ranked second in the USILA poll and first by Inside Lacrosse. The Blue Devils close non-conference action Sunday, March 14, at Jacksonville. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m.
