DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils are set for two contests on the road this weekend, beginning with No. 1 North Carolina Friday, Feb. 26 in Chapel Hill. Opening draw is set for 6 p.m., on ACC Network with Jay Atler and and Sheehan Burch on the call. Following Friday's contest, Duke will travel to Greenville, N.C., to take on East Carolina at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Head coach
Kerstin Kimel's daughter, Caroline, is a sophomore for the Pirates.
LAST TIME OUT
The No. 15 Duke women's lacrosse team came away with a gutsy 12-8 victory over No. 18 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper
Sophia LeRose came off the bench for the Blue Devils as Duke trailed 5-4 with 15:49 remaining in the first half. LeRose was a force in goal, only allowing three goals with eight saves and three ground balls in just under 46 minutes of action.
Offensively, nine different Blue Devils registered goals in the victory as
Katie Cronin,
Caroline DeBellis and
Gabby Rosenzweig notched two goals apiece. Rosenzweig led the team with five points from her two goals and three assists. Duke assisted on half its goals, while Rosenzweig and DeBellis have two goals in each of the three games this season.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
The Blue Devils will face the Tar Heels for the 40th time in program history on Friday. North Carolina holds a 25-14 series lead and have won 10 straight contests. Duke's last win came on April 16, 2014 in overtime in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels are 3-0 to start the 2021 season with wins over No. 6 Stony Brook (14-7), No. 8 Florida (11-5) and High Point (19-5). Led by senior All-Americans Emma Trenchard and Taylor Moreno, the UNC defense has held each of its three 2021 opponents to single-digit goals.
KIMEL/LEVY LAUNCH LAX PROGRAMS
Head coaches Jenny Levy and
Kerstin Kimel are longtime close friends, as UNC and Duke each launched their women's lacrosse programs in 1996.
They represent two of the seven winningest head coaches in NCAA Division I women's lacrosse history (Levy 3rd, Kimel 6th).
DUKE VS. EAST CAROLINA
Duke and East Carolina will meet for the fourth time in program history as the Blue Devils are 3-0 in the series.
East Carolina is 2-2 this season with wins over Furman (16-14) and Campbell (20-8). The Pirates fell to No. 13 Virginia (6-21) and Davidson (6-15).
The Pirates are led by Megan Pallozzi with 13 goals.
THE DRAW CONTROL QUEEN
Junior
Maddie Jenner continues her dominance at the draw in 2021 and has 30 draw controls through three games.
Jenner had 15 draw controls in Duke's 24-8 commanding win over William & Mary, just one off her career career high.
The Annapolis, Md., native is ranked fourth in the nation with 10.00 draw controls/game.
ROSENZWEIG MAKES AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Graduate student
Gabby Rosenzweig has proved to be one of the best and most versatile players in the ACC in just her three games with the Blue Devils.
She owns six goals and seven assists for a team-leading 13 points and has picked up two ground balls and caused two turnovers on the defensive end.
The Somers, N.Y., native has registered two goals in each of Duke's three games this season.
