DURHAM, N.C.—Former Duke All-American
Myles Jones and current defenseman
JT Giles-Harris are not only two of the best to play their positions in Duke men's lacrosse history, but they are two of the best Black players to step on a lacrosse field according to US Lacrosse Magazine and Blaxers Blog. The list was created with feedback from over 25 members of the lacrosse community.
Throughout the month of February, US Lacrosse Magazine and Blaxers Blog have partnered to shine a light on the Black men and women who have paved the way for this generation of lacrosse players and beyond through a variety of pieces. The latest story turns to the field of play as they compiled a list of the best Black men and women to step on a lacrosse field.
Included in its coverage during month of February has been a profile on Duke's first Black player, Chuck Sherwood, and his legacy.
"We recognize that there are plenty of worthy candidates, and we welcome conversation on more players deserving of being honored during this month," wrote US Lacrosse Magazine. "We'd like to celebrate as many Black men and women in the sport as we can."
In addition, to presenting the All-Time Men's and Women's Black Lacrosse Teams, US Lacrosse Magazine and Blaxers Blog also compiled a Future Leaders of the Black Lacrosse Community list. Duke senior
Nakeie Montgomery is among the 20 people – a range of coaches, players and personalities – named.
A two-time First Team All-American at Duke, Jones is among the 12 players voted to the men's team, while Giles-Harris was an honorable mention pick. In all, 28 Black players ranging from Jim Brown in the 1950s to Giles-Harris who is a current collegiate player, made up the list. Giles-Harris is the lone active collegiate player chosen.
Jones departed from Duke as the highest scoring midfielder in Duke history and second highest in NCAA history with 231 career points. He won the L.T. j.g. Donald MacLaughlin Award as the nation's top midfielder twice and was the 2016 ACC Offensive Player of the Year. He ranks eighth in Duke history in points and is one of five Blue Devils to record 100 career goals and 100 career assists.
Giles-Harris, the 2019 ACC Defenseman of the Year and First Team All-American, anchors the Duke defense. The Nyack, N.J., native is on pace to break the Duke record for caused turnovers in a career, needing only 14 more to pass Luke Duprey. Arguably, the best defenseman in the country, Giles-Harris has played in all 68 games of his career and started 67.
Montgomery, a midfield leader for the Blue Devils, has been incredibly active off the field. One of the founding members of UNCUT Duke – a branch of the student-led athlete-driven storytelling platform originally created at North Carolina. In addition, Montgomery has been a leader when speaking out about diversity and racial equity and continues to be a leader both on and off the field for Duke.
Duke returns to host Air Force, Saturday, Feb. 27. Faceoff is 12 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium, on ACCNX.
