DURHAM, N.C. – Duke shut out visiting Furman, 7-0, to close out its non-conference slate on Sunday afternoon in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Â
With the win, the Blue Devils swept the weekend after also registering a 5-2 victory over East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon.
Â
Duke controlled doubles action right from the start. In the three matches, the Blue Devils only relinquished two points.
Edu Güell and
Luca Keist got things started first with a 6-1 victory on court two. No. 55 ranked
Garrett Johns and
Sean Sculley then followed that up with a 6-0 win on Duke's main court to clinch the doubles point.
Faris Khan and
Niroop Vallabhaneni were on the verge of their first win as a duo but their match went unfinished at 5-1.
Â
The Blue Devils carried that momentum into singles action with
Michael Heller and Güell making quick work of their opponents. Heller blanked James Roelofse 6-0 in the first set on court six before recording a 6-2 victory in the second frame to hand Duke a 2-0 lead in the overall match. Güell cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jake Bhangdia on court two to create a 3-0 gap between the teams.
Â
Samuel Rubell then clinched the match for Duke on court three after he registered a 6-2, 6-2 feat for his fourth singles win of the year. Less than a minute later,
Andrew Dale made it 5-0 in favor of the home side following his 6-1, 6-2 victory over Emil Westling on court five.
Â
Keist and Drew Singerman went back-and-forth for much of their match on court four before Keist pulled out the 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. Much like the Keist-Singerman match, the battle on Duke's main court between Johns and Ivan Mitric was one to keep an eye on. The visitors claimed a 7-6 (4) first-set tiebreak win but a 6-1 victory by Johns in the second frame set up for a thrilling super tiebreaker in the third. Johns was then able to outlast Mitric 10-7 to secure the Blue Devils' match sweep.
Duke will shift its attention to ACC action when it travels to Georgia Tech and Clemson on Feb. 26 and 28, respectively. Friday's matchup with the Yellow Jackets is slated for 3 p.m. in the Byers Tennis Complex, while Sunday's meeting with the Tigers is set for 1 p.m. at the Duckworth Family Tennis Center.
