ATLANTA, Ga. – Duke registered its first ACC win of the season Friday when it defeated host Georgia Tech, 6-1, at Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
Â
With the victory, the Blue Devils shifted to 5-4 on the year and 1-0 in ACC action. The Yellow Jackets dip to 6-4 and 1-2, respectively.
Â
After Georgia Tech earned the 6-1 win on court three to begin doubles actions, Duke saw the No. 55 doubles team of
Garrett Johns and
Sean Sculley beat fellow nationally ranked opponent No. 31 Pablo Schelcher and Marcus McDaniel, 6-3, on court one. With the doubles point hanging on the result of court two,
Edu Güell and
Luca Keist outlasted Keshav Chopra and Brandon McKinney, 7-5, to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Blue Devils used that momentum to extend their advantage to 3-0 in singles action after victories by
Michael Heller and
Faris Khan. Court six was the first to finish as Heller defeated Chen Dong 6-2, 6-1. Khan followed closely behind with a 6-3 win in set one before clinching the point with a thrilling 7-6 (10) tiebreak win.
Â
Johns then clinched the match for Duke and earned his fourth singles victory in dual action after his three-set win on court one. Playing in his hometown, Johns took the opening set 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-4. The sophomore was able to outlast his foe in the final frame though and registered the 6-4 third-set win.
Â
Despite dropping one singles match on court four, the Blue Devils recorded two additional victories on court two and three to secure the 6-1 overall win. Güell defeated No. 59 ranked Andres Martin 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) on court two for his third singles dual win of the year, while Sculley beat Chopra on court three in a wild matchup 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 1-0.
Â
Duke will remain on the road Sunday when it travels to Clemson for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Tigers at the Duckworth Family Tennis Center.
