Duke Grinds Out 4-3 Win Over Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Duke closed out its first ACC weekend with a 4-3 win over Clemson on Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.

Thanks to Friday's win over Georgia Tech and Sunday's victory over Clemson the Blue Devils start league play at 2-0 and 6-4 overall.

Clemson saw its top doubles team beat No. 55 Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns, 6-2, on court one to kick off the day. The sophomore duo of Andrew Zhang and Samuel Rubell then tied up the doubles match at 1-1 following their 6-3 victory over Carlos Kelaidis and Andrew Puscas on court three. The overall doubles point would come down to the outcome of court two. Unfortunately for Duke, the home side would register the 7-6 (3) tiebreak win by defeating Luca Keist and Edu Güell.

The 1-0 deficit didn't scare the Blue Devils heading into singles action as they proceeded to rattle off four-straight wins on court one, five, four and three to claim the overall match in comeback fashion.

Johns started the rally with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Yizhou Liu on court one. Andrew Dale and Zhang followed closely behind with 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-4 victories, respectively, to put Duke in front at 3-1. Sculley then secured the match for the visitors after he garnered a 6-2 win in set one and a 7-6 (5) tiebreak victory in set two.

Clemson earned wins in the final two contests on court two and six, but the overall match was already clinched.

Duke is back in action next Friday and Sunday when it travels to Notre Dame and Louisville for two more ACC contests. The Blue Devils face off against the Fighting Irish on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Courtney Tennis Center before meeting up with the Cardinals on Sunday at noon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
