DURHAM —The quartet of graduate students
Cameron Badour and
Joe Robertson, senior
Wilson Stephenson and junior
Kenny Brower will serve as team captains for the Duke men's lacrosse team in 2022 head coach
John Danowski recently announced. Additionally, graduate students
Mike Adler and Cameron Mulé
were selected as assistant captains for the 2020 campaign.
Robertson returns as team captain for a second consecutive season, while Badour, Brower and Stephenson take on the role for the first time. Adler and Mulé
also will be in leadership roles for the first time.
A graduate student, Badour returns to the field in 2022 after suffering a season-ending injury in 2021. After working tirelessly to come back from a couple of injuries, Badour will bolster the midfield unit. He has played in 25 career games for the Blue Devils, starting eight on the first midfield line. In 2021, he started all five games he played last season, scoring five goals and handing out two assists before suffering the setback. Badour owns three hat tricks in his three campaigns on the field, while also excelling in the classroom as a four-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member.
Brower, a two-year starter on close defense, will be the leader of the defensive unit in 2022 after learning from All-America defenseman
JT Giles-Harris the past two seasons. A starter in all 17 games last season, the Massapequa, N.Y., native was third on the team with 11 caused turnovers and ranked fifth among non-faceoff players in ground balls with 21. Drawing the opponent's top attackman on occasions, Brower had at least one ground ball in 13 games and registered five caused turnovers in the three NCAA Tournament games last season.
Recently named to the USA Lacrosse U21 National Team roster that will represent the United States at the U21 World Championship this summer, the junior has started every game of his career and owns 36 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers.
Robertson, a three-year starter on attack, has been one of Duke's premier attackmen during his career. He has started 52 of 53 games in his three seasons on the field – he missed the 2020 campaign to injury – and ranks 22nd in Duke history with 173 points. He is 27 points shy of becoming the 14th player in program history to record 200 career points.
As a senior, Robertson started all 15 games he played and ranked third on the team in scoring with 36 goals and 18 assists for 54 points. When the lights shined the brightest, Robertson came through in the clutch for the Blue Devils as he registered five game-winning goals, including three in overtime. He ranked fourth in the ACC in goals per game (2.4) and eighth in points per game (3.60) en route to earning USILA All-America honorable mention recognition.
Arguably one of the best comeback stories in recent years, Stephenson returned to the Duke defense in 2021. The native of Greenwich, Conn., returned to the field for the first time in 637 days when he saw action in a 17-8 win over Mercer University. Less than a month later, Stephenson earned his first career start as a close defenseman as the Blue Devils defeated High Point, 27-8. In 12 games last season, which included nine starting assignments, Stephenson finished with 19 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
In Stephenson's two seasons on the field – he missed all of 2019 fall and 2020 spring recovering from countless surgeries – he has played in 28 games and has 34 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. Like his fellow captains, he also has performed in the classroom, earning ACC honor roll recognition all three years.
Entering his second season as a Blue Devil, Adler returns to the cage after a stellar first campaign in Durham. The native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., arrived at Duke following a standout career at Saint Joseph's and didn't miss a beat. Adler started 16 of 17 games for the Blue Devils, finishing with a 10.22 goals against average and a .529 save percentage. He made double-digit saves in 10 games, including collecting a season-high 17 in a home victory over North Carolina. Adler has played in 52 career games and enters the 2022 season as the active leader in saves (588) and minutes played (174,898).
A veteran attackman for the Blue Devils, Mulé returns to bolster a talented group on attack. A native of Dix Hills, N.Y., Mulé played in eight games with one starting assignment in 2021. In arguably his best career moment, Mulé came off the bench in overtime against Notre Dame to score the game-winning goal on extra man. He finished the season with seven goals and an assist, including a hat trick against High Point. He has played in 24 career games and has 14 goals and one assist.
The 2022 Duke men's lacrosse schedule is in the final stages of completion. The Blue Devils as usual open the year in early February with ACC action starting in March.
