Blue Devils Ring In New Year at Southern Scuffle

DURHAM – The Duke wrestling program (6-4, 0-0 ACC) is set to open the new year at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga from Jan. 1-2, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The event is the final regular season tournament for the Blue Devils this season, before dual match action returns on Jan. 13 against Appalachian State. The entire event will be broadcast via FloWrestling, with brackets to come on FloArena. The opening round will begin at 10 a.m., at the McKenzie Arena.

The field is loaded with dozens of the country's top wrestlers and features representation from 30 other universities, including eight ranked programs – No. 2 Penn State, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 NC State, No. 8 Cornell, No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 11 Missouri, No. 14 Minnesota and No. 20 North Carolina.

Other competing schools are Air Force, Appalachian State, Bellarmine, Buffalo, Cal State Bakersfield, Columbia, Davidson, Drexel, Gardner Webb, George Mason, Little Rock, Maryland, Michigan State, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Rider, South Dakota State, Stanford, The Citadel, VMI, West Virginia and the host Mocs.

Redshirt senior brothers Josh Finesilver and Matt Finesilver have each earned seeds in their respective weight classes, with Matt earning the top seed at 174 pounds, while Josh will be the No. 3 seed at 149 pounds. The duo continues to maintain their national top-10 rankings, with Matt entering with a perfect record of 17-0, while Josh is 16-1 overall.

Redshirt senior Kaden Russell is also back in action as the reigning ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week. The Cleveland, Ohio, native took home the ACC's weekly honors for the first time after he turned in a 3-0 weekend in Duke's home opening dual slate and has now won four straight matches. Redshirt junior Gabe Dinette and junior Vincent Baker are also ones to watch this weekend, with both entering on three match win streaks.
