KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Duke freshman
Michelle Cooper has been named a first-team All-American by United Soccer Coaches, as announced by the organization Thursday.
Cooper becomes the first freshman in program history to earn All-America status and is the only newcomer listed on this year's First Team. The Clarkston, Mich., native is Duke's 16th All-American since 1992 (20 total honors).
Recently tapped a semifinalist for the coveted MAC Hermann Trophy, Cooper's All-America selection is the latest recognition of a sensational freshman campaign. The forward tied for second in goals (12) and fifth in points (29) among all freshmen nationally, while ranking in the top five in the ACC in each category. With two tallies against St. John's in the NCAA Championship Round of 16 on Nov. 21, Cooper set a Duke program record for goals by a freshman.
The ACC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-ACC pick was held without a point just four times in 18 appearances. She started off her career with at least a point in each of Duke's first seven matches, including a goal versus No. 10 Stanford on Sept. 2 and an assist on the game-winner at No. 2 North Carolina on Sept. 17. After missing three contests in the middle of the season, she returned to net three goals in her next four matches, highlighted by an overtime winner to lift Duke to a 1-0 victory over No. 15 Notre Dame on Oct. 21.
Duke has boasted a United Soccer Coaches All-American in six of the last seven seasons, including three selections in 2017. Cooper is the first Blue Devil to be named to the First Team since
Kayla McCoy in 2018. Junior
Sophie Jones earned third-team honors in 2020-21.
