DURHAM – New Duke softball signees Kairi Rodriguez and Aminah Vega recently completed a stint representing Puerto Rico at the inaugural 2021 Junior Pan-American Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Â
Rodriguez and Vega helped lead team Puerto Rico to a bronze medal, defeating Peru, 3-1, in the bronze medal round on Thursday. Starting at catcher and shortstop, respectively, each scored runs in the sixth inning, with Vega reaching on a triple to pace a comeback from a 1-0 deficit.
Â
The duo were also key factors in Puerto Rico's wins over Venezuela and Brazil in Group B, contributing to six of the team's 12 runs in a 12-2 win over Venezuela, while occupying spots in the middle of the batting order. Vega finished off the group stage with a .600 batting average, good for the fourth highest by any player in the event.
Â
It's not the first time Vega has competed for team Puerto Rico, after representing the island as the youngest player on the national team in 2019, in Irvine, Calif.
Â
The duo will come to campus next fall and play in their first season with the Blue Devils in 2023.
