DURHAM – The Duke men's lacrosse team garnered the No. 3 spot in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Division I Men's Preseason Top 20 poll released Monday. The ranking is compiled by USA Lacrosse Magazine staff in consultation with college coaches.
Reigning NCAA Champion Virginia tops the list, while 2021 runner-up Maryland is second. Georgetown and Notre Dame round out the top five at Nos. 4 and 5,
respectively.
The Blue Devils feature a depth of talent all over the field and return five of their top six scorers and two of the three starting close defensemen and goaltender
Mike Adler. USA Lacrosse Magazine recently tabbed three Blue Devils to its preseason All-America squads with
Nakeie Montgomery,
Brennan O'Neill and
Tyler Carpenter earning recognition.
O'Neill is the top returning scorer after posting 45 goals and 10 assists in his rookie season. Graduate student captain,
Joe Robertson, returns as the veteran attackman after registering 36 goals and 54 points overall last season to push his career total to 173. Duke also will benefit from the transfer of
Sean Lulley from Penn. He started 31 games during his time with the Quakers, scoring 39 goals and dishing 39 assists.
Montgomery, a 2021 first-team All-American, will be the leader in the midfield. The Dallas native is coming off a career-best 22-assist season and owns 106 career points. Graduate student captain
Cameron Badour returns to the field as well after missing much of last season to injury, while
Owen Caputo looks to build on solid sophomore and junior campaigns.
Junior
Kenny Brower, also one of four team captains
, is set to anchor the close defense. A two-year starter, the Massapequa, N.Y., native is one of the top cover men in the country and will consistently draw the opponent's top attackman. Fellow captain
Wilson Stephenson bolsters the defense after he returned to the field in 2021 and started nine of the 12 games he played.
Graduate student
Matt Chmil, senior
Bobby Wade and junior
Jake Caputo are veterans as short-stick middies. Duke added depth to the defense with a host of transfers in
Gavin Lindsay,
Jack Frisoli and
Jack Zukowski.
Jake Naso and
Jordan Ginder will handle the faceoff duties. Naso is coming off a stellar rookie campaign, setting a Duke freshman record for faceoff wins and ground balls.
In addition to the wealth of talent returning, Duke also welcomes a talented group of 10 freshman, headlined by the top-rated midfielder
Andrew McAdorey.
The 2022 Duke men's lacrosse schedule is in the final stages of completion. The Blue Devils as usual open the year in early February with ACC action starting in March.
