DURHAM – The Duke men's lacrosse trio of
Nakeie Montgomery, Brennan O'Neill and
Tyler Carpenter are among the 39 players selected to USA Lacrosse Magazine's Preseason All-America teams as announced by the magazine Dec. 20.
Montgomery garnered first team recognition as a midfielder, while O'Neill and Carpenter landed on the second team at attack and long stick midfield, respectively. Duke is one of five programs to have at least three players on the All-America squads.
Montgomery, a USILA first-team All-American in 2021, returns for his final season as a Blue Devil in 2022 with 58 goals and 48 assists to his name. He has been a part of the first midfield line for Duke for much of his career, starting 36 of his 60 games played. Possessing incredible vision on the field, the Dallas, Texas native dished a career-high 22 assists last season en route to being named to the All-ACC squad.
O'Neill looks to build on his fantastic rookie season in which he finished second on the team in scoring with 45 goals and 10 assists for 55 points and earned honorable mention All-America accolades. He scored at least one point in all 17 games and had nine hat tricks. Voted 2021 ACC Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches, O'Neill was lethal on extra man for the Blue Devils, scoring nine man-up goals. He ranked first among all freshmen nationally in goals per game (2.65) and was second in the ACC and 18th nationally in overall goals.
A USILA All-America third team pick as a sophomore, Carpenter looks to build on his breakout season. The Durham native played both long stick midfield and close defense a year ago and was crucial to Duke's success at the faceoff. He collected 72 ground balls and led the squad in caused turnovers with 23 takeaways. Carpenter also added two goals and an assist on offense. For his career, Carpenter has played in 25 games and owns 95 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers.
The 2022 Duke men's lacrosse schedule is in the final stages of completion. The Blue Devils as usual open the year in early February with ACC action starting in March.
