DURHAM – The Duke women's soccer team earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last 11 years and will host Old Dominion in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils (13-3-1) receive their 27th all-time bid to the NCAA Tournament and enter as a top-16 national seed for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
"Congratulations go out to our staff and our players on the wonderful job they have done this whole season," said head coach
Robbie Church. "To get a No. 1 seed for the third time in our school's history is absolutely awesome. I think everybody is over the moon excited about being able to stay and play at home in Durham. I'm really happy about that, but that got us to playing at home – that doesn't win games. Now, our job is to get ourselves ready for Old Dominion."
The winner of Friday's match advances to the second round to face the winner of LSU (11-7-1) and Memphis (13-4-2). Pac-12 champion UCLA (16-0-3) is the No. 2 seed in Duke's region, while Big East champion Georgetown (13-1-6) and Auburn (12-6-1) round out the top four.
The ACC boasts three of the tournament's four No. 1 seeds, as tournament champion Florida State (16-1-2) and regular-season champion Virginia (16-2-2) join Duke on the top line. The league's nine total teams in the field are the most of any conference.
Rutgers (17-3-0) received the other No. 1 seed after taking the Big Ten regular season title.
Duke earned the top seed in its region after putting together a 13-3-1 overall record and 7-2-1 mark in ACC play. The Blue Devils, who are currently the No. 2 team in the NCAA's Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), picked up several marquee victories this season over tournament selections Arkansas (No. 2 seed), Stanford, North Carolina (No. 2 seed), Wake Forest, Notre Dame (No. 3 seed) and Florida State (the tournament's overall No. 1 seed).
Duke is 9-1-1 in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed and advanced to the College Cup in each of the program's two previous No. 1-seed appearances (2011, 2017).
Old Dominion (13-4-1) brings a four-match winning streak to Durham and is coming off its first Conference USA Tournament title in program history. The Monarchs and the Blue Devils share two common opponents this season, East Carolina and NC State.
Duke is 4-0-0 all-time versus Old Dominion, including 3-0-0 under Church. Friday marks the programs' first postseason meeting.
"Angie Hind is a fantastic coach there," Church said. "Congratulations to them for winning Conference USA. She'll have that team ready. It is a challenging first round game for us."
First round matches will be played Nov. 12-14, while the second and third rounds will take place Nov. 19 and 21, respectively, and the quarterfinals on Nov. 26-27. The 40th annual NCAA Women's College Cup will be played Dec. 3-5 at Stevens Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
