DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team captured a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) over Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 15-10 (6-8 ACC) as the Hokies drop to 10-16 (1-13 ACC).
"This was a good weekend for us to win Friday and today," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "Now, we hit the road and we have a few tough road matches coming up, but this is great for the team."
The Blue Devils were once again led by senior Ade Owokoniran with 13 kills and just one error to hit .500 percent while sophomore Georgia Stavrinides added 10. Junior Lizzie Fleming also tallied seven and no errors to hit .700 percent as the Blue Devils hit .299 for the match.
Setter Camille Nazor dished 35 assists while libero Mackenzie Cole picked up 18 digs to pace a steady Duke defense. At the net, Fleming recorded three blocks while Nazor tallied two aces for the serving corps.
Duke jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the first set and didn't give up the lead once as Stavrinides tallied eight kills early in the match.
The Blue Devils struggled a bit to find its rhythm in the second with seven lead changes and 11 tie scores. A huge block by Fleming and Nazor tied the match up at 18 and put the momentum back on Duke's side. The Hokies came back to tie it up at 22, but Moorea Wood came off the bench and provided a big spark late in the second to help lead Duke to a 2-0 advantage. Graduate student Payton Schwantz also got in on the action and registered four kills on six attempts with her first trip to the front row in 14 matches.
Duke took charge of the match in the third set with a 15-5 run as Duke hit an impressive .519 percent with 15 kills and just one error.
The Hokies were led by Griere Hughes with 10 kills while setter Brie Postema dished 27 assists.
Duke travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on Boston College Saturday, Nov. 13.
