DURHAM – Duke director of track & field and cross country
Shawn Wilbourn has unveiled the upcoming 2021-22 men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field schedule. The Blue Devils are set to host a pair of meets at Morris Williams Stadium during the 2022 outdoor campaign – the Duke Invitational from April 7-9 along with the ACC Outdoor Championships slated for May 12-14.
"Track season is approaching quickly, and we are gearing up to run, jump and throw at some of the best facilities on the east coast during the indoor season," Wilbourn said.
The indoor season begins Dec. 4-5 at the JDL College Kick-off in Winston-Salem, N.C.
"For the first time in many years, we will compete in an indoor meet before the winter break. The meet in December at the JDL Fasttrack facility will give us an opportunity to evaluate our training and make any necessary adjustments before we get into the heart of the regular season."
After the new year, Duke travels to Blacksburg, Va., for the next two meets. The Blue Devils will compete in the Virginia Tech Invite from Jan. 14-15, before closing out the month at the Hokie Invitational Jan. 21-22. While some members of the team return to Blacksburg for a third time to compete in the Virginia Tech Elite, the rest will head for the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Both meets are slated for Feb. 4-5.
Duke stays busy during the next two weekends beginning with a split roster at the Darius Dixon Invitational (Lynchburg, Va.) and Boston University Valentine Invitational (Boston, Mass.) on Feb. 11-12. The following week, the team will compete at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg and the DMR Invitational in Winston-Salem, with the former serving as a prelude to the 2021 ACC Indoor Championships, hosted by Virginia Tech from Feb. 24-26. The indoor season concludes in Birmingham, Ala., with the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11-12.
The outdoor season will commence shortly after the conclusion of the NCAA Championships, with the Blue Devils opening competition at the Bob Davidson Invitational Mar. 18-19 in High Point, N.C. Duke closes out the month of March at the Texas Relays (Mar. 24-26) in Austin, Texas, and Raleigh Relays (Mar. 25-26) in Raleigh, N.C.
"For outdoors, we are very happy to be traveling again," Wilbourn said. "The highlight of our season will be returning to the Texas Relays following a two-year hiatus. I think everyone involved with our program is excited to compete and build off last year's success."
Following the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point April 1-2, Duke returns home to Morris Williams Stadium to host the Duke Invitational. The Blue Devils will head back to High Point for the Meet of Champions on April 16 before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for the next two meets – the Virginia Challenge, from April 22-23 and the Virginia Invitational on May 1.
After being slated to host the event in 2020 but missing out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke will host the 2022 ACC Outdoor Championships May 12-14. The outdoor season concludes with the NCAA East Regional from May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind., followed by the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.
