DURHAM, N.C.—Six current Blue Devils are among the 30 invited to the U.S. men's U21 team's training weekend at Ohio State. The training camp is in preparation for next summer's World Lacrosse U21 Championship in Limerick, Ireland.
Blue Devils
Jake Caputo,
Grant Mitchell,
Jake Naso and
Brennan O'Neill are members of the current training camp roster and
Kenny Brower and
Charlie O'Connor are among the six additional players invited to camp. Duke's six representatives are the most of any college program with Yale having four on the 30-player list.
Caputo, Brower and Mitchell are the veterans of the group as juniors, while Naso, O'Connor and O'Neill are sophomores for the Blue Devils. Brower is a two-year starter on close defense and Duke's top returning defensemen for the 2022 season. Caputo has been a standout as a defensive midfielder and a threat offensively on the transition, while Mitchell is a first-year Blue Devil after transferring to Duke from Ohio State.
Naso and O'Neill had standout rookie seasons for the Blue Devils. A faceoff specialist, Naso garnered USILA All-America honorable mention recognition and led the ACC with a .629 winning percentage at the X. O'Neill, an attackman, was voted the ACC Freshman of the Year after leading the team with 45 goals and ranking second with 55 points. O'Connor played in 11 games and started six at midfield, finishing with four goals and an assist.
"It's been almost two years since we have gotten together and played outside competition," said Myers, the head coach at Ohio State who also led the 2016 U.S. U19 team to a gold medal. "This national team experience and overall process has truly been like no other. We are very grateful for all those at USA Lacrosse and World Lacrosse for making this U21 championship possible."
The U.S. team will hold practices, compete in a controlled practice with Ohio State and play a regulation international game against North Carolina.
"This weekend will be critical in making final evaluations and building on what we have been able to establish at previous camps. We are excited about this 30-man training roster that will be coming to Columbus. We have included men from previous camps and our player pool. This will be a competitive group and provide the staff quality time with the men prior to making our decisions on the final 23 heading into next summer's World Lacrosse Championships in Ireland."
