DURHAM – Behind a brilliant pitching performance, the Duke softball program opened the home fall ball schedule with a 6-1 win over NC State on Friday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.
Five Blue Devil pitchers combined to allow just one hit, coming on a home run by the Wolfpack's Sam Sack, while striking 13 in the win. Graduate student
Peyton St. George got the start, going two innings and striking out all six batters she faced on swinging strikes. Sophomore
Jala Wright added three more strikeouts over two hitless innings to lead a consistent relief corps.
With the win, the Blue Devils have started the fall schedule with a 3-0 record, outscoring opponents 24-2. The team has also struck out 10 or more batters in all three games this fall.
St. George kicked off a string of seven straight swinging strikeouts by Blue Devils pitching, as the unit carved up the Wolfpack offense. While Blue Devils pitching was taking care of business, the offense started off with a bang, as junior
Kamryn Jackson launched a three-run home run in the second inning.
Despite the home run by Sack that shaved the NC State deficit to two, the Blue Devils were able to capitalize on six errors by the Wolfpack defense. Duke also drew six walks and three hit-by-pitches in the game, using speed on the bases to capitalize on the mistakes and score runs in the fifth, sixth and eight innings.
Senior
Kristina Foreman earned the only other RBI of the day, going 1-for-3 overall. Sophomore
Kelly Torres played a critical role in managing the game behind the plate, while also reaching twice on two walks.
Senior
Shelby Walters and sophomore
Lillie Walker delivered more of the same for the pitching staff in the circle, combining to strike out three over four hitless innings to complete a 10-inning one-hitter.
Next up for the Blue Devils are back-to-back home games against East Carolina on Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. and UNC-Greensboro on Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
